We have plenty of evidence that the Tollan are "way smarter than us" (tm).

So - why are they not the Fifth Race? If they are so far ahead of humanity, and in being so must be close to, or past, the Nox (as per Enigma), surely they could be?

Or, are they so absorbed in staying out of the way and keeping their knowledge to themselves that they are not interested in such things?

I don't think the Tollan would be willing to have any part of that sort of thing. Look at how unwilling they've been to share anything that would help SG-1 avert a planetary disaster! That kind of mentality isn't found in someone who is a member of an alliance such as this.

Well yeah but as I remember (I may be wrong) the Asgard said 'humans' rather than 'The Tau'ri' so maybe this was aimed at ALL humans or maybe the Tollan in particular. The Tollans would probably be interested as they only trade technology with civilisations with an equal or higher technological base than themselves, e.g. the Nox and the Asgard.

Also, whatever happened about the other two races in the alliance - the Firlings and the super-super-super advanced Ancients. I have only seen up to the end of season three (living as I do in the horribly backward UK) but I have a sneaking suspicion that the enery-based alien from 'Maternal Instinct' could be an Ancient, am I right????

Well, I have now seen to the end (virtually) of S4, and I don't think it is true. But, we learn SLIGHTLY more about the Ancients, in that they are not totally omniscient....
