Is James Cameron as active on "Dark Angel" as the late Gene Roddenberry is on "Andromeda?"
Yes. And more. So says executive producer Rene Echevarria.
"Jim has always been more involved than people thought," Echevarria said of the show's co-creator, best known for his "Titanic" and "Terminator" feature films. "Someone of Jim's weight in the film world sometimes gets involved in a TV project in name only. But Jim's always been involved in a lot of things."
Echevarria admits that he has taken on more of the workload since Cameron and co-creator Charles H. Eglee of "Murder One" fame have been busy working on other projects. But that doesn't mean Cameron is a stranger on the "Dark Angel" set.
"He comes in and edits sometimes, takes a pass at an action sequence if he can," Echevarria said. "He reads all the scripts, has comments and suggestions. Chick (Eglee) has stepped back to that level of involvement (as a collaborator), as he and Jim are partners in that sense. They're there for me. It's been great. The've got some cool stuff in the pipeline."
Production also has been running more smoothly this season while filming takes place in Vancouver, Echevarria said.
"We have been on budget for every episode," he said. "I think the fourth one was slightly over, but we'd actually been under on the previous one. We've never come under before.
"(But) we figured out how to do the show. Part of the problem was the action and the stunts, which are very time-consuming. That's primarily one thing. The other things is, we do a lot of location work, and all those locations have to be dressed for our near future setting. Everything has to be dressed. You can't go just shoot on the corner. It's not stage work, either. We don't have that many standing sets (and) our stories take us all over."
The second season of "Dark Angel" premieres Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. on the Fox network, completing its move from Tuesday to Friday nights.
