Re: The Outsiders

Hi there,

Yes, I've read it (many times)!! It was one of my favorite books when I was in high school. In fact, it was one of those books that inspired me to write myself ;-).

Best,

Was the recent Nicole Kidman film based on this book?

Sorry, if that's a stupid question, but I haven't read the book or seen the film. I just wondered since they have the same title.

No Dave, the recent Nicole Kidman film "The Others" was a whole different kettle of fish to this story of teenage rebellion and responsibilty.

There was a movie based on the book the guys are discussing here, notable for its early brat pack stars, and I think it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise (back before his teeth were perfect), Diane Lane, Emilio Estevez were all in the cast. The film wasn't bad, but didn't hold a candle to the book. For some reason I always think about The Catcher in the Rye when I think about the Outsiders -maybe because they were two of the (very few) books I had to read to at school that I really enjoyed.

For those of you in the know - what else did the author write?

My index of scifi books has The Puppy Sister -- Young-adult fantasy. A puppy refuses to believe she’s not human, and actually manages to tranform, slowly.
