Eleven And well deserved they were too!

Not only did it win eleven, which tied a record for most oscars won by one film, but it also was the first film with multiple nominations that won every category in which it was nominated.

It was also the first fantasy ever to win Best Picture.

Actually, I think the sweep was in deference to the quality of the whole trilogy, not just "Return of the King", but who's going to quibble? Certainly not me.
