DeForest Kelley, the crass southern Dr. Leonard H. McCoy from "Star Trek," may have passed away June 11, 1999, but he still isn't forgotten by his two costars that shared not only plenty of screentime with him, but their lives as well.

William Shatner (Kirk, TOS) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock, TOS), both shared stories about their late comrade during the recent Slanted Fedora convention in Las Vegas.

According to Jacqueline from the Trekker Newsletter, Shatner had one last chance to talk to Kelley before he passed away.

"DeForest always talked about doing a western with Leonard and myself," he said, "He brought that up many times over the years, and we had the same conversation the last time I spoke with him."

Shatner gave a story about a time when Kelley didn't speak to him for a year after he told Shatner about the death of his little dog, Ethel. Apparently, Kelley was quite attached to the dog, and was saddened when she died in a freak accident. Shatner had asked how the dog was killed, and Kelley told him it was from running into a sprinkler head.

"It was one of those slight uncontrolled laughs that escapes you when you hear something absurd," Shatner recalls. Of course, "he eventually forgave me."

Nimoy remembered Kelley as the "salt of the Earth. He never had a bad word to say about anyone."

I might have laughed at the sprinkler head thing too. I remember a similar thing when someones pet duck was eaten by a dog, sometimes you know you shouldn't laugh, but can't help yourself.

<snicker> oh how sad ....sorry but I know exactly what you mean Dave <G>

yes, i can see how one would laugh about a dog running into a sprinkler --

however, it is sad that both Kelley and his dog are gone. Bones was always my fave character on TOS --- i had the same feeling when i heard George Peppard (Hannibal from the A-Team) had passed away -- very sad indeed.

hard to believe it was 2 years ago that DeForest Kelley died.

he was a great character, both on and off screen.

Class act ...both in trek and others movies he starred in.... will be sorely missed by me
