DeForest Kelley, the crass southern Dr. Leonard H. McCoy from "Star Trek," may have passed away June 11, 1999, but he still isn't forgotten by his two costars that shared not only plenty of screentime with him, but their lives as well.
William Shatner (Kirk, TOS) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock, TOS), both shared stories about their late comrade during the recent Slanted Fedora convention in Las Vegas.
According to Jacqueline from the Trekker Newsletter, Shatner had one last chance to talk to Kelley before he passed away.
"DeForest always talked about doing a western with Leonard and myself," he said, "He brought that up many times over the years, and we had the same conversation the last time I spoke with him."
Shatner gave a story about a time when Kelley didn't speak to him for a year after he told Shatner about the death of his little dog, Ethel. Apparently, Kelley was quite attached to the dog, and was saddened when she died in a freak accident. Shatner had asked how the dog was killed, and Kelley told him it was from running into a sprinkler head.
"It was one of those slight uncontrolled laughs that escapes you when you hear something absurd," Shatner recalls. Of course, "he eventually forgave me."
Nimoy remembered Kelley as the "salt of the Earth. He never had a bad word to say about anyone."
