If the concept of the Stargate program was real, it would be nothing like on the show

First let's look at how the program origionated. Cathren would not have been the head of the "translating project". She is a civilian, unless I'm mis-informed, and there is no way any civilian would be givin the kind of leway and freedom she had.

Daniel would not be any part of the program in any way. The Stargate program is one of the nation's best kept secrets. There is no way in hell any civilian archiologist or translator would ever be brought in, regardless of how good he or she is. The very knowledge of the coverstone's existance would have likely gotten someone like Daniel killed, and bringing in a civillian without permission would have gotten Cathren booted off the program.

The origional recon mission would have been the same, with orders to destroy the connecting gate if danger to earth was found. As for the planet's inhabitants, i don't believe that the troops would have "made nice" as they did in the and series. Military troops on an alien planet would likely be hesitant to interact, especially being only on a recon mission. They would survay the town and quary from a distance, and move on.

...and forget about fighting Ra. As soon as that ship lands and the Goa'uld are estabolished as a threat, the soldiers would detonate the Stargate, possibly sending some of their own back to earth first.

Well I disagree somewhat on the subject of civilians scientists in the military. There are currently civilians with high level clearance working with our military. You don't have to be IN the army/air force/marines/navy/etc in order to work for them.

Still, you have to admit that Daniel would never be brought in like he was. Cathren would never ever be able to just one day decide "hey, I think I'll bring this guy in on the project" and just go get him.

...I also stand by what I said about Cathren's freedoms with the program.

Well, in the movie, ya get the idea that Catherine has been watching Daniel for quite a while, and I doubt she would have just suddenly decided that he was the person she needed..
She would have had full profiles on hundreds of archeologists, and studied all their theories, and agreed with Daniels the most..

And what "freedoms" did Catherine have? Yes, she was in charge of the translating program. She was the best qualified for it. But she would still have to answer to someone above her who was military. Colonel West I think it was at the time. Even then she needed his agreement to even "show" Daniel the actual stargate.

When Jack showed up and started labeling everything as clasified, Cathren said something to the effect of "I was told I had free rein over the project". That's not the exact quote, but I think it's close.

Anyone dealing with classified material has to go through the security clearance process first, and I don't think that can be waived. Also (depending on the project), a person may be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement. This process is quite thorough and can also be lengthy, although it could probably be expedited for high-priority cases.

*I* think, that when you get down to it, the military are still human (most of the time!), and when you've got people bowing down to you, it's kinda hard to walk away! And if Daniel *was* on the mission (I agree with that he might not be), then Jack would haveta go after him to get him, and then he'd meet all the inhabitanrts anyway, so it seems that interacting couldn't be avoided.

Also, it's not like the soldies had a chance to blow up the SG (is it? Ages since I watched the film!); Ra's guards attacked them pretty quickly!

Agree with your other points tho!
