I love SG-1 and all the theories and so on seem fine to me usually except for one and I'm sure you all know the answer so humour me, ok?!........

In the episode "Seth", Jacob Carter says that there are only thousands of Goa'uld in the galaxy (of which only dozens are system lords). However, there are surely billions of symbiote carrying Jaffa (you can see where I'm going with this).

So...........................

WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THE SYMBIOTES ONCE THEY MATURE?

tec'ma'te KingKnitz,

the goa'uld catch very much hosts during their wars against other races (e.g. u tau'ri make very good hosts  ) ...

and in case the symbionde does not find a host it has the ability to overtake the Jaffa who carries the goa'uld ..

to see that not all goa'uld become gods .... i mean systemlords ;) if they take a host look @ the mai'tac tok'ra -- tok'ra r hosts owned by a goa'uld symbionde but they aren't gods ..

it's the same @ our race -- when a goa'uld is not strong enough the fight against the other gods ... systemlords he'll serve the god who capped him or he'll be destroyed ..

lek'tol !

I appreciate that all goa'ulds do not become gods, but won't that mean that there are still billions of goa'ulds (in hosts) once they mature and are taken out of the jaffa?

In COTG there were a few goa'ulds in Apophis' entourage (about a dozen) and we have seen others since (Klorel, Lord Zipacna, Amonet, etc....) but this is not enough to merit all the simbiotes that used to be in jaffa.

tec'ma'te,

that's right -- there r much goa'uld which aren't gods ...

on Chulak the population is about 98% Jaffa , the rest has special status, is a goa'uld (=matured prim'ta) or others ...

so u've seen Jaffa @ war and Jaffa @ civil (like Fro'tac, Rya'c & Drey'auc and more) ..

but u've only seen goa'uld @ war .. these goa'uld @ war r nearly only gods (not all) ...
but there r much cities of my god Apophis (and i ensure u all other systemlords too) which have a lot of civilian goa'uld which work for the ruling Systemlord ..

e.g. there r much goa'uld which work for Apophis (not on Chulak - they r Jaffa - but on other planets) ..

lek'tol !

Oh right. So 'The Court of Apophis' in COTG and Bloodlines might have been a goa'uld city with lots of civilian goa'uld?

tec'ma'te Kingnitz,

as much as i know the episodes "COTG" & "Bloodlines" r on Chulak -- on Chulak there r a few Goa'uld but much Jaffa (god Apophis recruits his new Jaffa there -- here the prim'ta r inserted into the hosts) ...

they've all a sign @ their forehead and people with this sign are Jaffa (e.g. Teal'c, Fro'tac, Rya'c, Shak'l, Bra'tac, ...)

people with NO symbol are gods (=goa'uld)
(e.g. Apophis, Klor'el, Sha're, Lord Zipac'na [episode Pretense])

lek'tol !

One thing to remember, of course, is the seriously high fatality rate amongst Jaffa. Even without the impact the Tau'ri are having, the Goa'uld SL's have been trashing each other in alliances, counter-alliances, and probably side-swapping for centuries.

So, even though there appears to be thousands and thousands of Jaffa, how many get killed each time a ha'tak gets destroyed, for example?

Two questions spring to mind:

a) is the Goa'uld tendency for arrogance, paranoia and attempts for galaxy-domination genetic, or cultural? [or possibly as a result of sarcophagus use?]

b) are there cities on some un-seen planet where Goa'uld "civilians" live in basically peaceful conditions?
