The UK's most famous broadcaster, the BBC, will not get the chance to show Enterprise on any of its channels. A new report yesterday broke the news that Channel 4 has bought the rights to the series.

This will end the BBC's status as the home of Trek for over 30 years, when it showed the Original Series in the 1960's. It was expected that the broadcaster would continue it's commitment to Trek by showing Enterprise. But a BBC spokesman said that the corporation was not approached over the rights to the new series. The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager will continue to be shown on the BBC.

The full rights to air the series in Britain are owned by Sky TV. Sky is a satellite broadcaster, and its services are only available to homes with a satellite dish, cable or digital capabilities. Enterprise will be seen first in Britain on Sky One early next year.

Most television programmes in the UK are still received on an analogue signal through an aerial, and the standard channels transmitted in this way are known as 'terrestrial' TV. It is these rights to show Enterprise on terrestrial TV that Sky has sold. Four is one of five such channels available across the country.

Channel Four is already the home of fellow genre show Stargate SG-1 and showed Babylon 5 throughout its five year run. It was also rumoured to be interested in Gene Roddenberry's: Andromeda earlier this year. The channel's cable and satellite spinoff channel, E4 currently shows the Original Series every weekday. It is not yet known when or how the channel plans to show Enterprise

ah -yet one more trick up the sleeves of the digital cable carrier-types to get ppl to latch on and 'buy' digital/satelite cable tv --
(not that that's what they did, but that's how it sounds)

so - how bad is that for all you peeps over in the UK??

For those in the land of the Viet-Taff (Wales) it is very bad news. We don't get Channel 4 or Digital (at least not in Welsh Wales).

The BBC's comitment to Star Trek, or any other science fiction, has always been dubious, replacing it with anything that comes along- snooker, football, fishing etc.

In Wales it is worse. They add on Rugby, Eistedfordds etc. But at least everything was shown- eventually.

Suppose I'll have to look at Satelite again- If only they showed anything I wanted to watch :(

It's not just Wales either. Some parts of Cumbria (I have friends live there) and Scotland cannot recieve CH4. But at least if they can get it it's in English.

and theres me thining channel 5 was the pits

No, Channel 5 reception is even worse.

My parents can't even get that properly without buying a 50ft aerial (which they, not surprisingly, decided against) or getting cable (which they may) and they live near Newcastle Upon Tyne. (They are in a dip in the land between two transmitters.)

But they aren't missing anything on Channel 5 anyway!

O, CHannel 5 is really bad here! All fuzzy n that! :(

it will be a shame not to be able to watch the show without blasted ad breaks... thats the only thing hte BBCs good for...

That is true. I much prefer it without ad breaks, especially the Sky One - US Style - 5 min long ones.

I can put my kids to bed, wash up the dishes, make a coffee, send off a couple of emails, and the adverts are still on :(

Oh well, least we should be able to watch Enterprise on Channel 4 and hopefully Sky One then.

Know what u mean about the Sky One breaks Dave. Can usually do the washing up by the end of the first break.

annette :D

has a think of buying that sky plus thingy.... u know the one that pauses live sky and records all and misses the adverts etc....

But the cost put me off... £300 +

"A spokesman for the BBC told reporters the network was not approached about the rights to the new series."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there usually a mad scramble to buy the rights to good new shows. Is it BBC policy now to sit back and wait to buy the shows that the other channels don't want?

The BBC seem to be loosing out on soooo much good tv these days....

They sure do and then wonder why people not watch the stations when they show such c*** at times.

But if you are hoping that Ch4 will show 'Enterprise' without interuptions for sport, you do realise that they also won the contract to show televised Cricket?!

Well could well be.... sounds like people are saying that when Ch4 get the series it may well be interupted by the Cricket... mmmmmm not sure if thats a good thing or not ... AS i too love both.....
