questions

Okay I just saw this movie for the first time last tight. I have some questions:

1) What was up with that mirror? Was it just to show that Neo can in fact manipulate the Matrix, but doesn't know how to controll it yet?

2) How does the Oracle know everything?

3) Why does the Oracle live within the Matrix?

4) Wouldn't the machines know that someone like the Oracle was within the Matrix, and take steps to silence her?

...more later...

I wondered about the Oracle too - if all those 'gifted' children were being gathered there, even for brief periods of time, wouldn't it be quite dangerous? I don't believe we get to see the Oracle at all in the sequels, so I don't know if it will ever get explained.

I don't know the real answers, but this was what I thought:

The mirror was there to show Neo's slow awakening to the real world; so it was symbolic and "just to show that Neo can in fact manipulate the Matrix, but doesn't know how to controll it yet?"

The Oracle is a psychic. She has premonitions and clairvoyance of real events, but like everyone else she is inside the Matrix, so nothing is real. She clearly doesn't know everything, since she says that Neo is not "the One", but she did see the future; something that even the Matrix itself would be unable to predict.

Agent Smith and the other Sentient programs ought to detect her and seek her out and destroy her. Morpheus and Neo did take unusual steps to avoid being followed to the Oracle, but with all the other children there waiting to be tested, she would have been easy to track down. Maybe she has a sense of them coming and moves on to avoid them, maybe she can block them detecting her in some way.

there is alot things that need explaining but it could be that the machines are thick(especially the agents)

Morpheus said the Oracle told Neo "exactly what he needed to hear." Not necessarily the truth. I don't think it was a matter of her not knowing that Neo was the One. He needed to hear that he wasn't the One, and that Morpheus was basically going to end up sacrificing himself for nothing. It pushed Neo past a lot of his doubts just in his efforts to save Morpheus.

Bleh...I don't know if that made much sense. Anyway, that was my impression of that scene. I could be wrong...

I think you are right Quill - Neo IS the One, and the Oracle knew that, but told him what he needed to hear. But I did wonder how it helped Neo to think that he wasn't the One - wouldn't trying to save Morpheus seem even less likely? I dunno.

In this case, I guess wacky reverse psychology was more effective than telling him flat out, "You're the One. Now go save the world, pal."

:D

i'd have to agree with you. Before he was told that he wasn't the One, he was just trying to live up to everyone's expectations. Finding out that he wasn't allowed him to escape form that and focus on what he was doing, instead of trying to be the One. If that makes any sense...

Great questions!

Most will be answered in Reloaded, especially the ones about the Oracle. :)

I loved reading your interpretations though, guys. Can't wait to see what you have to say about Reloaded!
