From Caillan at the Slipstream
Brent Stait (Rev Bem) left the cast of Andromeda during the filming of the second season, Tribune and Fireworks representatives revealed today.
"Brent Stait chose to leave the show for personal reasons," Tribune director of creative programming Seth Howard and Fireworks supervising producer Karen Wookey said during a chat at AndromedaTV.
"We miss him," they continued, "and hope that we will be able to play again sometime in the future."
The actor had been having many problems coping with his heavy make-up. "Brent had a severe allergic reaction to the considerable prosthetic, it became unbearable, although he was a serious trouper."
Exactly how Rev Bem will bow out is still under wraps at this stage. "Keep watching, the way will become clear," Howard and Wookey said.
There won't necessarily be another character to take over Rev Bem's role of 'spiritual advisor.' "We miss Rev, and I for one miss that particular quality about him [and] although we wouldn't duplicate his character, we can go there in other ways - keep your eye on Trance."
"I still see Brent a lot," said Gordon Michael Woolvett (Harper), who also attended the chat. "We snowboard together - oops, I mean, uh, go walking together. He's doing well and working a lot."
Stait has been with the series since the premiere episode, 'Under the Night'. His character was absent during many of the early second season episodes because of the prosthetic and make-up difficulties. It is not currently known which episode will see Rev Bem's departure.
The actor is not the first cast member of a science fiction series to have problems with their make-up. Virginia Hey chose to leave the cast of Farscape during its third season because of skin complications brought on by her alien transformation.
A full transcript of the episode will be posted soon at the official site.
