A Game Of Thrones: The Movie

i was wondering if anybody was going to point out that quote from GRRM site. although it seems strange to go by number of pages to establish the lenth of the a movie. even including everything in the books i dont think the estimate would be 1 hour = 100 pages. lots of pages could be the result of detailed and descriptive style of writing which can be captured by a single shot on camera or a well acted scene. at the same time with the established estimate of 6 books averaging close to 1000 pages each, any hollywood adaptation seems far fetched.

I think I may have mentioned before that one approach to film it would be to take just one or two characters, and simply tell their point of view story. However, of course, that would turn other POV characters into nothing more than supporting roles. So I'm sure there would be a problem of choosing which characters (s) to make the focus of a film.

yes I agree Brian. Tis why I think it would be too difficult to make this book into a film. You would be appealing to just a certain number of people as opposed to the entire audience the book has.

I think the whole argument of the movie depends on whether or not they would either condense (ala LOTR) the stories or try and do it as a trilogy.
I think the "easiest" part to film would be Roberts Rebellion against the Targaryens.
It would be a fairly tight 2hr movie if the prologue was done right

Of course, that would mean getting rid of Dragons, Others and everything else magical

still could be cool though

ideas:
Ned:Gabriel Byrne
Jamie: hate to say it, but Leo Di Cap or Orlando Bloom could do the good looking swine well :)
Robert: the guy from Gladiator (the big German fella who dies at the very beginning!) would be good, but hows about Brian Blessed?
Jon: Jake Gyllenhall (donnie darko)
Tyrion: Warwick Davies (or digitally shrunk i.e. LOTR Kevin Spacey)

actually, putting this together, I notice the lack of African-type characters in GRRM book's - sad really, it excludes a lot of talented actors :(

I don't know why, but every time I picture Gregor Clegane, the guy who played General Kael in "Willow" pops into my head. Maybe it's because I was a little kid when I first saw it, and that guy scared the heck out of me...

I don't think Leonardo has the right look for Jaime though. I always imagined him as very tall and slender...

As for Orlando Bloom... I think that'd just wreck the whole movie for me. The guy can't act! IMO, he just lives off his face... *shrugs*

So although I don't think Jude Law is good-looking, I think along the lines of him would be good. :)

I dont thjink they would make a good job making a movie of aSoIaF... It is too complex!
It would do as an animated series, maybe, but as a movie... it doesnt convince me, I was so sad when I went off the cinema when I saw the fellowship of the ring and dindnt meet Tom Bombadil... also, They ate my mental image of how the characters should be, the film ate it all. I dont want the same to happen with aSoIaF.
Can anybody remember how did u imagine Aragorn, or Galadriel, whoever, before the film? i cannot, and thats the thing i hate from books made movies...

Hear, hear, Shaggydog! No director would ever be able to do a good enough job for me! Even animated films make an impression- my first mental image of Aragorn/Strider was from the animated Lord of the Rings. I'd rather not have it animated either- especially not Anime. Sorry to all you Anime fans out there, but a doe-eyed Ned Stark with goofy hair doesn't really fit the bill.

However hypocritical it may be, though, I do like the characters drawn by Amok. I think they're closest to what I imagined most of the characters to be like, especially when compared to the cards of the GoT board game (which I LOVE!).

Shaggy have you ever seen the book A Tokien Bestiary? That is where I got most my mental images of LotR before the movie. Very interesting artwork.

Yes I have that book... probably my mental images were alterated by that book (and some others) and by the anime film too, but at least it were MY mental images, it were what I had done with them. Now they are this actors crew... And it makes me sad thinking about Elrond(for example) as the same bad program of Matrix... it is weird...

In regards to my last post on this subject I must again state my opposition to any television production of this book. This book is excellent as is and the author, imho, would not sell the rights to do a television production.

Have to agree that it just wouldnt work, to do it properly would take far too many films and to do it improperly would just suck. I think Gemmel's Rigante or JV Jone's new trilogy would do very well however. Lots of opportunitys for souped up graphics and far fewer subplots to worry about.

Not all anime is of doe eyed characters! "Akira" anyone? Anyway, I'm falling on the side of no way would this or could this ever be made into a creditable movie. Certainly not without making major sacrifices that all fans of the book series would condemn. Even a television series wouldn't fit the bill. The pure scale of the armies talked about in the books just wouldn't work in a television series. It's just all too ambitious...

Oooooh, I think he'd be only too happy to do so if there was the chance to do it Shogun style, like he wrote in his FAQ...And I think it could be done well, too.

I just think that, with his past experience of writing for TV, (Beauty and the Beast, anyone?) he'd insist on being as involved as possible in the adaptation process and he just doesn't have the time...Unfortunately...

They should hand it over to the guys who maid Babylon 5. Those guys did a better then average job on taking good writing and not turning it to s**t.

Another good cast would be the "I Claudius" team, but I expect they are all dead and dieing by now.

The chance of a lifetime awaits those who, if a movie is ever made, become part of that project. The role of a lifetime is in Tyrion Lannister, my favorite character in the story and one of my favorite characters of all time. The other character I would take great care in casting is Ayra Stark, her chapters are sacred to me! I have no idea who would play any of the roles I only know that if such a movie were made I would want to see George RR Martin on the set on pretty much a daily basis, or it would NEVER be done right!

Hi everyone. I've been reading your fascinating comments ever since GRRM posted this link and have finally decided to join the fun. Though the general consensus here seems to be that there won't be any movies for ASOFAI, I still like to think about what actors would be great for certain roles. Renly Baratheon for example would be perfectly played by Tom Welling (Clark Kent from 'Smallville'). And after recently seeing the movie 'Troy', I think that Brad Pitt would make an excellent Jaime Lannister.

The "Smallville" guy wouldn't bother me much, but I don't think I could handle Brad Pitt. I think he's a good actor, but I have issues with big name actors playing roles in things like this. I'd be thinking of him as Brad Pitt instead of as Jaime Lannister.

I agree about Pitt, but after seeing him play a gifted, arrogant, conflicted blond haired warrior so well, Jaime Lannister just jumped into my mind.

A SoS was as long as the ENTIRE LOTRs trilogy. Martin was asked about this in one interview and commented with that. He said something to the effect that it would take nine movies just to cover the first three books. Martin spoke about making a TV series, but doubted it was possible due to the fickle nature of TV. Since he used to write for the CBS series "Beauty and the Beast" he understands that he would be cancelled before the story could get going. That being said...it is fun to dream about someone doing as great a job on this as Jackson did for the LOTRs.
