These 'smallfilms' produced animations were part of my childhood, but are still amazingly popular today.

They were shown in the late '60's and early '70's and made by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin.

Do you remember 'Ivor the Engine' with Jones the steam, and a dragon that they kept warm inside the locomotive?

My favourite was probably 'Nogin the Nog' and the tales of the northmen. There were two series of that and I have them on video.

Then there is 'Bagpuss' recently voted the favourite children's programme of all time in some UK poll.

And last but not least -- 'The Clangers'

Some people think that they were the inspiration for the Stargate programme:

but I think they've mistakenly confused the froglet's hat with the sideways soup lake!

Anyway, you have 'Winnie the Pooh' here, and that is only barely fantasy, you have to have Noggin and the Clangers.

edit: excuse that unintended pun.

I used to watch Bagpuss and the Clangers.

Did you know the is actually a Clangers soundtrack cd available?

The Soup Dragon was my favourite.:D

I never actually remember watching Noggin the Nog

£13.99 at Virgin Megastore :D :D :D

I think I actually heard a track from it. Weird music with all the those clanger "woooh wo wo woo...." over the top :D

Strange indeed. ;)

I have some Ivor the Engine trivia questions courtesy of my sister's partner. Apparently, they are so overworked at his factory, they spend their time thinking up these questions :p

What was the dragon's name?

And where did it live?

clue: It's the second highest mountain in Wales.

Just off the top of my head (or from the pits of my memory) ... was it Idris? (in which case, did it live on Cader Idris?)

Noggin was wonderful. He had a dragon friend too of course, whose name I can't remember for the moment. But he was an ice dragon. And he had an evil uncle called Nogbad the bad.

I also enjoyed Poggle's wood, which came a bit later, but I never really took to Ivor. I don't know why.

Definitely Idris, but I had to look up the answer as to where he lived. As for Noggin's ice dragon, I'd forgotten he had a name -- I could only think of Graculus, the green bird (?a kind of cormorant?).

For anyone who misses Noggin the Nog -- http://www.nogginthenog.co.uk/

I think, from the picture and the "green" description, Graculus was a shag. (Though they look almost black, shags have a greenish iridescence, unlike cormorants.)

Who could forget the Pingwings?

(Too many of you, apparently. :()

Pingwings? Nope, doesn't ring a bell for me 'fraid. Too young for it perhaps ;)

They are not a Oliver Postgate programme but I noticed that 1976's The Flumps are making a comeback as well in 2015 apparently. Which I do remember, because for some reason I remember them having good strong regional English accents and a lovely silly theme tune. Pootle anyone?

Nogbad the Bad rocks!
