I don't wish to spoil anyone's enjoyment, but where else can I put this question?

Apparently, the all powerful new Goa'uld we have been waiting for, reveals himself to be... Anubis. I just wanted to know what we know about him.

All I know is that Anubis was depicted as a jackal, or as a jackal-headed man.

Probably because of the jackal's tendency to prowl around tombs, he became associated with the dead, and by the Old Kingdom, Anubis was worshipped as the inventor of embalming, who had embalmed the dead Osiris, thus helping preserve him in order to live again. His task became to glorify and preserve all the dead.

What is the connection between Anubis and Osirus? Do you think they will use that in his relationship with Sarah/ Osirus?

OK, well, in Egyptian mythology, Anubis (wirtten in Ancient Egyptian as Inpu) has a rather unclear family. His father is said to be Ra, and his mother either Isis :alienooh: or Nepthys (Isis' sister). It has been suggested that Nepthys had an affair with Osiris, and Isis later adopted him as their son, but it's not a very common belief. It has also been said that his father may be Set(h). Set was married to Nepthys, and in mythology killed his borther Osiris in an (unsuccessful) attempt to get the throne. There are also equally obscure myths that Bastet :alienooh: may be his mother. He may have had a daughter Kebechet, but I doubt that will come into Stargate.

Anubis was originally king of what Osiris is (the Dead, basically), but when Osiris was killed (by Set) Osiris (being a god had to inherit *some* title!) became God of the Dead, and Anubis as God of Embalming. He had a part in an important ritual of the Dead, but I won't go into that unless you want me to, as it's unlikely to come up in Stargate!! ;)

He's also sometimes seen as totally human.

As regards the myth of rivalry between Set and Osiris/Horus, Anubis is said to have defended the corpse from further attacks of Set - this might come into play in Stargate; but still seems unlikely.

And a fun fact - the black colour of his fur (as a jackal) is supposed to represent the colour of human corpses after they had undergone the embalming process.

Hope that helps; sorry if it's too dense!! ;)

No, Thanks. That is what I wanted!

I agree that I can't see much of that appearing in Stargate though. I see something building up in the storylines with Anubis though, for some eventual climatic end to the show. That sounds good to me!

Anubis

Hi, I've studied a bit but it's been a while since I've thought about all this. So, I thought he was protector of the dead, he was assinged to guide the dead into the underworld and protect them from harm until their heart can be weighed, he is also the one who weighs the heart, or holds the balance so it can be read by Thoth, the scribe. He is also needed during the embalming to do official ceremonies, and the opening of the mouth.

In the movie, he is Ra's right hand man, his protector, his best warrior. It seems funny that this is his role in the movie. Being that the human part of Ra is basically dead and he chose Anubis to be his protector because that's exactly what he is in mythology. Protector of the dead. The horus guards are just guards, which makes more sense because Horus in mythology has many faces and is god of so many things thoughout the history of the Egyptians. It is true, they like to make things confusing. It's hard to get it all straight, but I think the only thing that they could bring Anubis or Horus back for would be as protector of another higher up god.

Well, that's just a few of my thoughts. SS

I think some people speculated that it might not actually be Anubis the God/Goa'uld per se, but maybe just his captured Jaffa.
