what do u think Voyager would be like if Commander Shelby from TNG was the captain of Voyager.

This got me thinking, because someone suggested that there would have been no really long trip back to the AQ if Shelby was in command; she would have simply left the Ocampa to their fate and gotten Voyager back home.

Sooooo...did Janeway violate the Prime Directive and interfere in something she shouldn't have interefered in?

This is a question I tried to answer in a fanfic (Samuel's Gambit on the ST Fanfic forum).

Broadly. I don't think destroying the Cartaker really achieved anything, except delay the inevitable. The Ocampa were terminally nice people and had never faced the need to be otherwise. Whether they faced extermination immediately or have to wait for fifty years for somebody to find the tunnel in will not make a lot of difference.

As for the Prime Directive. It is a nice rule to hide behind. But by simply having been brought to the Delta Quadrant and having crewmen deposited upon the Ocampa makes it irrelevant. Federation crew have affected the 'balance'. The Ocampa now knew what was facing them.

Remind me of the plot again... I thought she destroyed the array to stop the Kazon getting hold of the technology (not only to defend the Ocampa.)

You could argue that it wasn't her fault if they did, but if the Kazon had got their hands on it, then they wouldn't have let Voyager back to use it anyway.

Long time since I saw the first episode.

But didn't the Kazon need the technology to get to the Ocampa? Especially as the Caretaker sealed them into their planet with his last chuff

If I remember correctly wasn't it some how Voyagers fault the Caretaker couldn't self destruct so they had to destroy it to stop the Kazon from using it. It's been a while so I don't know if I'm right.

Voyager stopped the self destruct sequence.. so therefore had to destroy it themselves
