I am quite concerned at the way some of the threads are going in terms of negative comments about the various Stargate SG-1 conventions.

Please note that this post is from myself as a moderator of this forum, and not as a convention organiser (well, mostly).

The main point of this is the negative comments made towards the Best of Both Worlds Convention in Australia. It is a situation that I believe has reached a point of being out of hand.

Anyone attending a convention has the right to their own opinion, but it is often the way that comments are made that cause a problem. We, as convention organisers don't (and can't) expect everyone to be happy with the way we handle or run a convention, and unfortunately we can't please everyone.

In a lot of cases, it seems that some people want to say some comments that are so derogatory that the people who run the conventions would be better off not providing conventions for the Stargate community. It seems that is the only way to stop the negative comments and sometimes insults.

But neither BOBW, Wolf or Gatecon are going to stop doing conventions, because it is what we love to do. We know we can't please everyone, but it makes it hard to improve the conventions if comments are aimed as attacks rather than providing us with the information that helps improve a convention.

The case of 'You never listen to us' is quite untrue... It's more a case of convention organisers (like any human beings with feelings... Yes, we are humans too !) tend to not take notice of comments that are abusive and don't offer valid points or suggestions.

Honestly, the best way to get a point across is.....

* If you are truly annoyed about a certain part of a con, then email it privately to the convention organisers.

* Don't rant and rave, and where possible, offer valid suggestions of how it could have been improved

* Remember, that if you have a complaint, then the fact is already past-tense, and think about how the same thing can be improved in the future

* If you are posting publicly, be honest, but be level headed about it.

* If you make a derogative comment, expect there to be a reply of the same calibre... Remember that you started the tone of the conversation, so you are responsible for the level of reply.

There are also bad things said against the people who are considered 'snitches'. Now, think about this one... If someone said something bad about you... wouldn't you want to know about it ???? One person who has been targeted like this is GateKing2000, and I think there are a few people out there who owe him (Arthur) an apology. He is only doing what he thinks is right... And it is. It's important for convention organisers to have people that scour boards like these to pick up on the general feeling of a convention they have just put on. That's how they determine areas to be improved.

You know... Things don't always run smoothly at conventions, and sometimes the organisers get so caught up at the time that it is possible that things get overlooked or forgotten. It's not done deliberately. They are there to provide you with a service that would not be available otherwise. Just think of a world with no Stargate conventions at all... It's a lonely world, isn't it ?

Neither BOBW, Gatecon or Wolf are large companies, and none of them do it because it makes them rich... Quite the opposite in fact. It's done for the love of it, and lot of times it comes at a high personal and financial cost. But that doesn't stop us doing it... Because a love of something is a powerful thing.

I say help us make better conventions instead of trying to destroy them.
