Son of Starfleet Admiral Paris.
Prior to his expulsion from Starfleet and prior to his service aboard Voyager, Tom Paris once served aboard the Starship Exeter, as briefly mentioned in 'Non Sequitur' VOY.
He was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of three other starfleet officers. Paris initially denied responsibility for the accident, but later admitted he had falsified reports to hide his culpability. The date of Tom's crime and subsequent confession (Caretaker VOY) is unknown. This led to his expulsion and prison sentence.
Paris became a mercenary for the Maquis, but was arrested by Federation authorities while on his first assignment for the resistence group. He was imprisoned at the Federation Penal Settlement in New Zealand on Earth, but was released in 2371 at the request of Captain Janeway.
In 2372, Paris became the first pilot to break the Warp 10 barrier, putting him in the same league as Orville Wright, Chuck Yaeger, and Zefram Cochrane.
As an academy cadet he majored in astrophysics, and he chose he Starfleet base outside Marseille, France for physical training in his second semester of the academy.
As an aficionado of 20th Century America, he was fond of traditional Earth foods, TV and cinema, music, specifically, rock and roll, and automobiles from that period. This manifested itself in his perculiar choice in holodeck entertainment programs, ranging from 'Grease Monkey' to 'The Adventures of Captain Proton'. He was an experienced rock climber and was skilled at spelunking (Blood Fever VOY).
