gateday with the shanks - chaotic report

Very good of you to post this for everyone. I read it with interest even though I am not an MS fan. I found it very interesting that Scott Bakula has asked for so much money for a con appearance...... it shows the level of importance he gives himself and turns me rather off watching Enterprise which doesn't really float my boat much in the first place!

Stargate holds... or rather held a lot more interest for me. Still as I will be at SG4 next weekend, it was nice to get a 'heads up' on what to expect!

;)

I was really disappointed to hear this about bakula as well. this is not even funny anymore, it's sad. he wasn't exactly the most well known tv actor alive before enterprise (quantum leap is quite a while back, after all), so this doesn't really make his lamp shine too brightly. :(

sometimes I really wonder if the fans are nothing to these people but cows to milk dry. :angryfire

Actually, I may be a little cynical, but I have always thought that..... remember these people actually get a lot out of these conventions.... much more than the fans do in fact. We pay to go and travel there and for accommodation. Their's is an expenses paid trip and with a fee into the bargain. As much as I would like to agree with the more hearty fans, I really don't think these people.... including Mr Shanks.....do it out of the goodness of their hearts alone....

;)

agree with you - but nobody does (well. some saints I never met aside.) I wouldn't work for my boss either if I wasn't paid. ;) and personally, I don't expect anybody hopping on stage and answering sometimes dense questions for pure fun reasons (unlike it's a masochist. can't judge this.)

at the end of the day, we have the choice: we can go - or not. so if I feel a convention is a rip off or one of the guests is a goof, I simply don't go. ;)

Thanks for the report...it makes for an intresting read.

As Im only going to my second con next weekend I can't really comment too much..but the one thing I say is that the thing that draws me to go the most is the good friends I am going to meet there!

:D

Scott Bakula thinks that he's say, Russell Crowe? Russell Crowe when doing a film can ask for a high fee and the studios will pay out because they know that old Russ is quite popular with the ladies and with the guys. A Russell Crowe movie is going to earn their money back and the fee that they pay to actors like Crowe or Julia Roberts which is so high because the actors know that the studios will pay up. However, Scott Bakula aint no Russell Crowe.

Ever wondered why RDA never does a Con experience? Perhaps he's gained experience and doesn't feel it's neccessary.

I have a feeling that RDA is put off by some of the more hysterical fans, and who can blame him for that?

The pity of it is that these guys, Scott Bakula included, are just actors doing a job. There is nothing more special about what they do for a living, than what I do for a living. Their's may be more fun of course, but at the end of the day we are all the same under the skin. We all get born, live our lives and then die.

Actors have the impression of their own importance from the reaction of the public to their performances. That doesn't make it reality. However, some of these people get their delusions mixed up with their capabilities. Scott Bakula is obviously one of these.

With RDA I just think it's a crying shame that he tars all of his fans with the same brush. He may well feel that he doesn't need them, but I still think he ought to make more of an effort and not stonewall them as much as he does. Far from appearing to be this self-deprecating person everyone insists he is, he just appears to be offhand and rather ignorant. I feel for the RDA fans out there who never get a chance to interact with him even in the smallest of ways. If he made just a small effort he might find that there are a lot of folk out here well worth knowing.

I am one of these who doesn't believe that the actors should or would give their services free of charge for conventions. Of course they should be paid a fee, they are performing after all. But what I object to is the inference that these people are so special that they warrant virtual sainthood and protestation from their fans that they do this primarily because they love the fans. They don't even get to know most of us, so how can they feel anything about us.... unless of course it's gratitude that we actually watch and support their shows?

I'd have more respect for them if they admitted openly that they like the extra publicity they get from a con appearance, they like the fact that they get an expenses paid trip and the fact that they get to perform live in front of the actual fans of their show is a bonus.

anni sez about rda:

the doc sez:

*now* I get it - you're the same anni who posted some highly amusing comments about rda and k's birthday page over at sg1fans, and you're also the one commenting on lexa doig in another thread. well, I always thought that for somebody who's not interested in rda and the shanks, you spend a lot of time writing about them.

actually, I can only think of one suitable answer to your comments:

LOL..... I have never pretended to be anyone other than who I am. Anni is my name, not a nom de plum.... and my comments are as viable as any other. How often I post on threads and forums is entirely up to me and is no indicator of whether I approve or disapprove of anyone.

If my comments make you that speechless then I am sorry, but I will not change my point of view to fit in with everyone else's idea of what should be posted. This forum I have found to be very good at listening to all points of view and opinions. Yes one gets arguments, but I expect that fully. And sometimes knee jerk reactions. I stand by the comments I make and will make them again if I feel it necessary.

I make comments on a lot of things, especially on these lists on RDA, MS, anyone who strikes my interest by something they do or say. I don't particularly rate RDA as an actor, and as a person I have no idea. The same for MS. But I speak as I find.

Is that alright with you?

I agree Anni....as a RDA fan...I feel sad that this is the case with him..:( :( I'd love him to show up at a SG Con and prove us wrong!! :D :D

To paraphrase the last half of an Art of Noise song called "The Holy Egoism of Genius":
...He hated to appear in public...hated to do conventions... Hated to sign autographs... He perferred dogs to people... no one was ever sure whether the spikes with which he armed himself with were activated by a savage insensitivity or the holy egoism of genius...

that's what I gotta say about RDA.

As for the MS report... Lovely report and it sounds like he did hit it off pretty good over there. :D How he reacted seems to erode my theory that MS hates to go them. I still think he only like to go to ones out of Canada. I think's he's playing for the world tours. :D It's likely he's feeling better as he leaves the show and is not under pressures.

paid guests

I've been to one convention, well 4 of them for the same show, but all the guests came to the con free of charge and were never paid a dime to come. They were for "La Femme Nikita". Nuff said. SS

Hmmm. Well..... I'm not sure if you actually think that Michael, Amanda, Don and the others come without a fee, because they don't...... They get paid rather a large fee, especially for events like Wolf....and I also know that they get paid rather well for Gatecon too.

Very few actors will turn down the publicity or the fee....or indeed the expenses paid trip... and they will often be advised to attend by their agents, especially if it's felt that they need the publicity.

No one blames them for this, They aren't going to want to do a performance and not get paid. And every con appearance is a performance. They may certainly enjoy doing it without a doubt, but they don't do it totally out of the goodness of their hearts either.
