I'm probably wa-ay behind the times here, but I just found this quote:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AMANDA TAPPING, Amanda's Q&A with her fans, 5th December 2001

Question #33 from Barbara: How do you feel about the possibility of Michael Shanks leaving the show in season 6, and if he does leave, can you give us a clue as to what happens to Daniel Jackson in the show?

Amanda: I am very sad about this. Obviously it changes a lot of things for all of us. I can’t tell how it happens but I hope the door has been left open for him to come back now and again. On our last day together Christopher, Michael and I hung out in his trailer all day and cried. We have been through so much together and it was just unbelievably sad.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aaaaghh! :crying:

I've also found this web site dedicated to bringing Danny back:

Maybe, just maybe...

Yeah our only problem is that Michael wanted to leave and was not pushed...he seems to be saying that if the scripts were good enough he may do a few of season six...so here is hoping..:D

No, he didn't *want* to leave. He just felt he had no alternative as there isn't really any scope for an anthropologist/linguist in the increasing number of military/N.I.D./conspiracy plots. This, I find, is an inescapable argument.

If there isn't a place for one of the two main characters from the movie, then what's the point in staying around?

Also, the first hand accounts of all the tears during the final shooting indicate that the severing of the 'family' bond between both characters and the actors who portray them was pretty painful. :crying:

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut :(

Yeah sorry *want* was a bad choice of words.

I totally agree with you but from what he has said about it all he seems ok with his *decision* to leave. I think its just hitting home that he has left as they start filming again soon.
I also think its a sore subject for many people and everyone has their own view on it so I hope no one gets too upset over anything said! :(

No - just upset that the gradual marginalization of his character left him feeling that he had no alternative but to quit.

It's very sad that such a major character should be left feeling that he's just become a part of the wallpaper :(

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut

I have to agree with Hatshepsut. It's a shame that the main character from the movie was driven out.

It's one thing if a show changes as a result of natural evolution (e.g. the kids on Buffy The Vampire Slayer graduate from high school). It's another thing entirely to have TPTB junk the original premise, add a completely inappropriate romance between two characters who never showed the slightest chemistry for the first three seasons, and turn the most popular character into a glorified extra.

There has been a lot of snide comments about hysterical 'Daniel Fans'. It's not just about MS, although I think both he and the character have been treated poorly by TPTB. The show has gone downhill over the last two seasons and as a result, has lost a significant portion of its audience. The show's core audience is women aged 30-45. The changes were deliberately made to attract males 18-24 at the expense of the long-term fans. Pardon me for getting angry about that.

Totally agree with you there....

This is what Michael Shanks had to say in the new Cult Times mag...

...Trying to find the right words, he goes on 'I guess what Im saying is that I feel that Daniel's continuing distance from the NID conspiracy and the military machinations that were permeating the series was a problem I saw developing. Ultimately it became the needle in my side that the character wasn't involved in those scenarios when the episodes came up which evenually prompted my request to leave the show"

Careful not to lay all the blame for his discontent on the shoulders of the writers or the exec produces of the show whom he still has the warmest friendship ect.....

That's soooooo sad. :( I hate good-byes. At least he'll be back for some guest appearances. :D

My little rant

I think you've got it absolutely right, Jobeth. There has been a woeful decline in the show in the last couple of seasons.

The original premise gave lots of possibilities for DJ's character to evolve, but the plots have gotten stuck in a rut leaving no room for the show's most sensitive character. He can't be Jack or T'ealc and the scripts won't let him be Daniel either. Just how military macho is he expected to become and still be recognizably Daniel.

And the "romance" angle between Jack & Sam, I find it unnecessary and even offensive -- certainly to common sense.

As for the "hysterical MS fans" -- well, they are a part of the show's demographic that will fade away if not addressed. It sounds as if TPTB may have heard, if not the shrill voices, at least the jingle of coin we have been known to spend on our favorite past-times.
