Karlsweb reports:
Stargate SG-1 will be moving to SciFi for its sixth season beginning in June. They'll be producing 22 new episodes. Then the autumn, it will start showing reruns beginning with Season One. Stargate SG-1 is currently airing Showtime on Fridays at 10pm.
MGM Television is also shopping the upcoming Stargate spin-off series for both cable and syndication runs (seeking a network to air it), according to TVinsite.com. The series is tentatively titled Stargate: Atlantis.
Most significantly, this news represents the first confirmation that MGM does plan to go ahead with the spin-off series. Previously, all that was known was that SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright had pitched the series to MGM (which distributes the series and owns the rights to the franchise), and intends on going that direction.
Where might the new series air? It will likely take the place of Stargate SG-1 on Fox owned-and-operated stations in syndication. But if MGM sells the show to a cable network as well, Atlantis will most likely see its first run on The Sci-Fi Channel or Showtime. The former seems more likely, especially if the sixth season of SG-1 pulls in good ratings for the basic cable network.
The site reported that MGM is preparing to launch the new series next fall, though STARGUIDE has previously confirmed that the new show will follow the next Stargate movie -- which won't begin filming until next fall, at the earliest. Atlantis could premiere as early as the fall of 2003.
