Investigations of problems at a progressive penal colony, take a sinister turn of events.

Before the machine with the flashing lights was designed, the staff writers had thought of other methods to gain access to Van Gelder's mind, and they devised the 'Vulcan Mind Meld' - one of the most important developments in Spock's character. Interestingly, Spock says that it is a "highly personal" thing, then both Spock, and every other Vulcan character in Trek use it over and over again!

Right up to the final draft it was Janice Rand who was to accompany Kirk to the planet not Dr. Noel. She was not allowed to be the woman the Captain falls madly in love with, and was eventually written out of the series format. The writers had already had the Captain leer at her in 'The Enemy Within' and she would want to show Kirk her legs in 'Miri'. They must have decided that having such a relationship onboard the ship would limit the Captain's other romantic entanglements.

Character names in 'Star Trek' are usually significant. Here 'Lethe', a mythological river of forgetfulness, is the name of a patient who has forgotten their past criminal life. That is much more subtle than Dr. Helen Noel, who Kirk met at a Christmas party, or Mr. Atoz, the librarian in 'All our Yesterdays'.

In this episode McCoy gives Kirk a hypospray by first ripping his shirt sleeve. Aware of the Captain's dwindling supply of unripped shirts, he always gives hyposprays through his clothing in the future!

The neural neutralizer room has a twentieth-century hinged door, while all the other doors in the complex are the automatic swish doors seen on the Enterprise.
