Salon.com Article

You mean Seven of Tok'ra, aka Tok'ra Ho?

The Salon article link was posted two days ago, prompting much heated discussion. I don't know if we really want to open that can of worms again.

There have been several threads about this article, but people can't seem to discuss it without getting overheated -- one thread has now been closed and some posts deleted after personal attacks. I would like to have a proper discussion of it, if we still can.

Here is my view:

I personally, do not agree with all it's conclusions, but being male, maybe I'm not qualified. However, there must be a large proportion of fans who do feel that way, and we have to respect their opinions. What I find objectionable about the article is that it puts forward the view that ALL female fans believe that, without any attempt to find an alternative viewpoint. I can see that that is the reason it has upset people, more than the opinion that it expresses.

I agree .... it's difficult to assess a viewpoint, if you only ever hear one side. That's why I much preferred Darren's article over at scifiguide, discussion from both angles. Much less likely to cause a stir because nobody is wrong. I was lucky enough to miss the "flames", only logging on once a day but I'm glad that the thread was stopped if that's where it was heading.

Sorry. I didn't see a thread containing the words 'Salon.com' in the title, and I only had five minutes of Net time, so I just posted. I didn't mean to start up another flame war, and I'm sorry.

Don't worry Raptor, some people might have missed the original thread, I'd rather see two links to a "hot issue" link than none at all. Just for your interest it was under the title of "Will Women destroy 'Stargate' ?"

Don't worry about the flaming, that's all been removed from what I can see from the original post.

Jeez . . . and I thought I got scorched from objecting to Sam's short haircut!

things have calmed down a bit. i know i personally did not care for the points of the article.
i'm a female fan, i'm not rebelling, my favorite (most beloved) character is still alive and kicking and i'm certainly looking forward to season 6.

i think that was my biggest objection with the article...it should have been labeled an editorial because it was no where near objective and used one segment of the fandom to represent ALL of us.

the comments were comperable to:

all brits have bad teeth
all blacks are on welfare
all middle eastern folk are terrorists
all men are jerks
all women are manipulating witches
all politicians are crooks

JUST USING GENERALITIES HERE, NOT MY VIEWS BUT USING THEM AS EXAMPLES

ms. mcnamara's comments were no less inciting.

I concur with Skydiver. There was much hard feeling and it spilled over here, which is a real shame... We are supposed to be civilized here... Raptor, you did nothing wrong! This is a subject that has driven many of us to despair about fan reactions and overreactions. Unfortunately the damage is hard to mend. We can only write to the studios involved in a polite way to express our opinions and save the dissing of others for our private time in the showers. We should be able to agree to disagree without it becoming a war... as disagreements often do in real life.

. . . and I still think it's just a t.v. show . . . but I could be wrong . . . :alienooh:
