Joe Mallozzi's opinion of Jonas

This is a quote from a chat Joe Mallozzi had with a fan group called the Sam/Jack Horsewomen.

I find him to be a very charismatic leader, someone you can't help liking.

Riiiight.

Leader? I guess if you consider being the first to run from danger a leadership quality, he qualifies.

"Can't help liking". Not hardly.

I find it strange how he can already have a set opinion on him considering filming of the new season only started a few weeks ago. Wouldn't it take more than one episode (Meridian) to judge this man's character? It seems weird that he can so readily be called a "charasmatic leader" when we've seem less than 15 minutes of the guy in action.

Maybe JM is just trying to drum up support for the charcter before we see him. It's like he's trying to get us to like him even before we really get to know the guy.

Sorry to follow up my own post, but something just struck me...

Was it painful? I'll have to get back to you on that one ;)

A) That's Joe's opinion and Joe is a bloke, right?

B) I'm a straight female and I don't find him remotely attractive.

Does this mean that Quinn is gay?

Are T.P.T.B. trying to set up a gay icon to extend the fan base?

Are we being set up for some slash plot lines?

I think we should be told.

Best wishes,

Are you kidding? Where exactly does the sexual preference come into the one quoted Joe line? Can a man not give his opinion on another man without everyone assuming he is gay, or the character is gay?

Of course :)

But Joe was very effusive, and Judas doesn't attract me in the least...

Actually, if Judas did turn out to be gay, I'd find that more acceptable than having him thrown at me with the heavily underscored message that: we're giving you ladies a Gorgeous Hunk that Smiles A Lot, and You will like him. [/brain-washing]

Also, ever heard the expression 'tongue in cheek'? ;) <chortle>

Sorry, Ice Queen, people who know me better tend not to take the things I say too seriously :) Though it is a fair point. Nothing wrong with having a gay character.

 It would also mean that S.G.-1 is totally politically correct - one male, one female, one black, one gay :D

Best wishes,

LOL, good point! :D :D

I'm surprised Jonas was called a leader.

He was an 'ethical advisor' (whatever that is) on "MEREDIAN", and SciFi called him a leader or something else. His title keeps changing.

Right now, I have no idea what you'd call him. I don't mind the actor, but the character just doesn't have enough of anything to make me like or hate him. He's just... there. If he vanished next week, I'd probably be there going, hmm, something's missing, can't put my finger on it, like when Tasha Yar bit the big one in ST:TNG.

JM is one of the writers on the show. As such he would have had a lot more knowledge of the character than a general viewer, being involved in creating the character.

As to a certain other question in this thread... while I don't think anything can be read into Joe's quote, I am currently working on a page on the Jonas/Teal'c interaction. :rain:

ooh, jonas/teal'c interaction?
sounds very interesting.
Please post it or a link when you get it done. I'd love to read it

JM may have a much more developed picture of what Jonas will become, but then JM has seen all the eps that haven't aired yet. Based on "Meridian" up through "Prometheus" I have seen nothing yet to merit JM's comments.

So far JQ is not a "charismatic leader" -- at best, he is an entremely pleasant young man with a quick memory and strong observational skills.

The writers seemed to have trouble deciding what to do with him up through "Nightwalkers." After that he's settling into a role that spans Daniel's and Sam's -- rather awkwardly at that. The writers have just written in useful characteristics even if they make very little sense. ... Oh, we have this round hole left by Daniel's demise. Let's carve this square peg to fit.

Fortunately, I find myself liking JQ in spite of all the writing flaws. It must be something that Corin Nemec brings to the role because the writers have given him damned little to work with.

there perhaps hasn't been as much time devoted to character development as we would like. And if we get a season 7, maybe there'll be more.

I honestly don't know when TPTB knew for sure that MS was leaving, personally i think it was fairly late in season 6 and have always been under the assumption that Meridian was cobbled together rather quickly. and that also means that Jonas' character was created on the fly.

We do get to find out a bit more about him in shadowplay (and some really good acting, imho on Corin's behalf....you have to see it to know what i'm talking about and i dont' want to spoil here)
and i have heard rumors of a bit more in the second half of the season.

Jonas is a lot like Ezri Dax on DS9...another character brought in in the last season of the show to replace a departing character/actor. (the actress that played Jadzia left the show and Ezri was created as Dax's new host). I seem to recall not much character developement on her part and teh presence of Dax used to get Ezri up to speed and having all the knowledge she'd need to sort of replace Jadzia.

I agree that there is a "cobbled" sense to the transition. Although MS gave his notice fairly late in the season, he had been hinting at it for some time, but apparently the writers had not put a continguency plan in the works. There is a feeling throughout the first few eps of S6 as though the writers were of two minds as to what to do with JQ -- put him in everywhere or put him in as little as possible (ok, one ep he's out of because the lad was getting married -- even actors are allowed to have lives).

I'm really hoping to see a lot more character development, including some backstory, in the latter half of S6 (and in any potential S7). The other team members have had 5 seasons to show aspects of themselves and JQ has a lot of catching up.

The comparison with Ezri Dax is entirely appropriate, although having set up the Trill species from STNG through DS9 we could accept her prior knowledge as carried by the Dax symbiote. Similarly, in Doctor Who, throughout the various incarnations, each was different, but carried the knowledge and experience of the former doctors.

Jonas' problem is that he isn't a Trill nor a new incarnation of Daniel. We have no real knowledge of his prior life or why he should just fall into place the way he has. We've been told he is a "quick study" (ooh, that's handy), has memorized all of DJ's notes (nice, but that doesn't mean he knows what DJ knew, only what he wrote down), and is very observant, as well as scientifically, linguistically, and diplomatically gifted. All very nice.

The writers have "grafted" characteristics onto him to fit him into the team. Jonas is entirely pleasant and very familiar, which in itself is a problem He lacks Teal'c's "alien-ness" -- a quality that still sets Teal'c apart even in S6.

I think we should be seeing JQ as a 'diamond in the rough' -- something alien, but not uncomfortable. An evolution over time might lead to JM's "charismatic leader," but I don't see Jonas just naturally turning messianic in the little time there is left.
