does anyone know the name of that escape hatch that shows up ocassionally, you know, the one in foothold and proving ground?

the one that goes from the sgc to the outside, and is it a series of shafts or just one ladder straight up?

thanks, 2muchtvs

An escape hatch of that type is known as a Jeffries Tube. (Named after Matt Jeffries.)

jeffries' tubes as in star trek voyager jeffries tubes ??

have they ever called it that on the show ? (stargate?)

Name

No, sorry. 'Jeffery's Tube' is strictly a ST convention that the real military doesn't use. That form of structure is commonly reffered to on blurprints, etc as an 'access shaft' or 'secured access shaft' as entry/exit is controlled by a hatch or door. The one on the show has a 'spin lock' hatch closure.

Rowan <too many years in the military ...

Can't much see the point of the Mountain having a 25 ton solid steel front door when you can get in by lifting up a tin can lid and getting in through the back. Where's the security - and defence against nuclear attack - in that! Hm?

hole in the ground

Now, I never said the 'Gate world was just like the real military. ;) Secure underground installations would would require something like this as a bolt hole pr emergency access point have serious electronic and physical lock systems to prevent such things. As best as one can.

And some underground facilities have no exit at all. Sad place to be if your elevator goes out. ;)

The Stargate universe is a fun place to play, but a lot of solid reality takes a backside to getting 44 minutes and 45 seconds of TV show out each week. :p

Sorry, didn't mean to be taken too seriously. I have seen a couple of documentaries on the Cheyenne Mountain complex tho' and it looks a fascinating place. Apparently the whole thing is a series of interconnecting boxes on springs about a 5 min drive into the mountain. I don't think I would care too much to be sealed in there with no exit, too claustrophobic, even though I believe folks locked in there in there can survive for up to 2 years. The 25 ton front door is real enough though.

CMC

S'okay... I don't generally take things too serious. Just a bit of a 'reality maven' when it comes to research, etc.

Quite a few of the exterior shots used in the show are courtisy of the Air Force. The thing that makes it so odd is: you can see 'The Mountain' from the highway right in front of it [well... part of the entrance parking lot]. Ft. Carson and NORAD share the same freeway exit. It feels strange to be driving down the road and see a big sign that says 'NORAD'. :p

If it's the same special I'm thinking of... they mention that two people are assigned every day just to go around and tighten the huge bolts that attach this giant steel 'box' - for lack of a better term - to it's springs.

You *really* don't want to get your CO ticked off at your in that place.

thanks Rowan - hey, do you know if it would be one ladder straight up or if it is a series of shafts.

thanks again, 2muchtvs

Ladders, et all.

From the installations I've seen - which haven't been all that many, it varies with the structure. Some switchback like a regular stairway until close to the surface [especially if it runs alongside a underground structure like the NORAD block house would be]. Some shaft straight up [some of the only cold war missle silos] and some are a combo of design.

Hey... it's the government. Nothing is ever consistant and it all goes out to the lowest bidder... as long as they have the right security level.

Rowan ;)

i know the hatch sam uses in foothold is accessed on level 16 (same level as the detention cells...real smart) and in matter of time we see them and the guys use ropes to get down so i'd guess even if it's not a direct climb down, it's a long one. like maybe there's a door halfway or something.

which could sorta make sense. if norad is level 1-11 and the sgc is below them then it'd make sense to seal off the sgc part.

in foothold sam just pops out (slamming the door...sound carries in a tunnel like that:shakes head:) but in proving ground we see that they've actually got a lock on it so every time someone sneaks out of the mountain they seal up those easy ways out.

the highway exits....i loved driving past norad/ft. carson. the exit was simply labeled 'authorized personnel only' and i'd imagine that if you went down the norad road you wouldn't make it too far before you met some nice friendly mp's.

you can literally see cheyenne mountain from a good part of Colorado springs...it's the only mountain in the area with antennas lining the peak.

Silos

They're still some out there for sale.

If you like places like Three-Toe, Nebraska. ;)

Is it named that way for the radiation effect on animals? :D I wager they're way outside my $$$ range. And there's still the feeling that it be the first place the bombs fall. Like, it's still on some defunked Soviet missle's target list after all this time...

My mate is planning on world domination when he is older. (he's crazy) and is planning to buy weapons and bombs. I heard that in Pakistan you can buy a tank for the equivalent of £1000! CHEAP! :D

cheap military supplies

Well, the local word up here in the Puget Sound is a couple of years ago when the Soviets were selling off a lot of their military stockpile Bill Gates bought about 30+ ICBM's with the plans of using them to launch his own sattalite communications network.

I'd laugh, but having lived in the shadow of "Williamsberg" {or "Gatesland", if you prefer], nothing like that would surprise me anymore. If that *is* the case, than Mr. Gates is something like the 5th largest missle 'power' in the free world.

And you thought you just had to look out for "Windows". ;)
