The End Of The Series?

Here we are in the middle of filming episode six (can't tell you the name) of very likely the last season of Stargate SG1 and already our staff have eyes on the end of the season.
We were talking about the end of our show with the girls in the front office today, and I think that we all agree that the last day of shooting here will be a sad one indeed.
We, and you have ben so completely entwined in the adventures of Jack, Daniel, Teal'c, Gen. Hamond, Dr. Frasier and Samantha Carter that this group of actors, lighting technicians, production assistants, caterers, and all the other too seldom mentioned craftsmen have become a second family for many of us on the show.
I honestly do not know if I will stay in TV after we wrap SG1.
After all.. how could you ever replace your family?

Well it is sad Boydo..... but it's also true that as one door closes another opens. Equally cliched, but also true, is that life moves on and takes us all with it.

Hopefully you will not be losing your second 'family'. They'll all still be on the planet somewhere and the nature of TV and movies is terribly transient anyway. You were lucky to get the six years of constancy that you did. These days, even out in the big bad dark world outside of TV and 'fantasy land' no job is forever.

I work as a contractor and do contracts in the UK and all over the world, I go into a place, establish communications, make relationships, then the contract ends and I move on. Sometimes a person may stay around in my life as a permanent connection, most of the time, those relationships I established die a natural death after a while. Such is life!

Only thing you can do is deal with it and then move on. But if the creative arts is something you always wanted to do, then don't let the end of Stargate be the end of that dream. There will be other shows..... don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

:D

That is one very sad post, Boydo :crying: :crying: :crying:

Especially so as I cannot help thinking that, had things been handled more sensitively at an earlier stage, season six need not have been the last series.

There is no shortage of ideas for new episodes as a glance at the fan fiction site here (or any other fan fiction site, for that matter) will demonstrate. I am convinced that the show has the legs to run for at least another couple of series after series six, if handled right. :)

I can think of at least one way in which R.D.A. could remain in the show and remain in close contact with his daughter, so not a problem there. Trouble is, the show would need more input from Dr. Jackson, and I'm thinking that's out of the question. <sigh> :(

Best wishes,

Yes......this is true as well Hat. But the direction of the show seems to have taken the same direction as many of the US-oriented TV shows. Off with the old and on with the new.....even though the new is possibly the most boring series ever shown....Dark Angel comes to mind here. What a tedious, uninteresting, uncompelling piece of TV garbage that show is. It doesn' t have even half of the fascination value of Stargate, all it seems to have is that irritating Max creature and her equally irritating colleague and some sort of 'our love can never be' ****.

However....it occurs to me that RDA himself has a rather low boredom threshold (he certainly gives that impression in any interviews I see or read) which might explain the desire to hop on to something a little more interesting. After all, 6 years....been there, done that, old hat. Of course most of the rest of the world have to stay in boring jobs day after day and year after year.

The business about spending more time with his daughter, as far as most people would be concerned, is a desire which is natural, but let's face it.....its also one that most fathers have. It just isn't feasible for the majority of the population who have to work long hours and often separated from their families for a lot longer than RDA ever was. Also, I can hardly see the need for his family living in LA when he was in Vancouver. Surely he should have been able to relocate his family..... as ALL the rest of us have to do in that situation. I know I sound hard here, but I look at my son who works all hours god sends just to feed and house his family...doing 48 hour duties and often missing out on the most important aspects of his son's life. RDA should think himself fortunate that he is able to indulge himself in that way.

Stargate could have maintained its freshness quite ably, had it had guiding lights and thoughts that went beyond the immediate 'moneymaking' aspect of the show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has managed it. And indeed, the whole thinking behind that particular show is that there are still millions of stories to be told...therefore it carries on and still holds the magic for disparate audiences wherever it's shown. Stargate had that promise and for some reason instead is shuddering to a rather pathetic halt.

I am sad for that, because it held so much potential. Perhaps it needs someone as vital and interested as Joss Whedon at the helm......but I for one will not be holding my breath. The show itself has long ceased to hold it's fascination for me. I find the fans' ideas and fanfics surrounding the Stargate universe to be far more fasinating and interesting. If the show were to continue they would have to work very hard to get back this viewer's interest.

That was indeed a sad post, Boydo and and I agree with both Annie and Hatshepsut. It would not have necessarily been the show's last season but as ar as we know it is.
I hope we will get to see the feature film after the end of the show though!
Boydo, as Anni said, unfortunately nothing good lasts long and we have to close doors although it may hurt in order to open new ones. I hope you'll find another family and another project that can give you a full and active life like SG-1 did for the last six years...I know it's never easy to say good-bye.

awwww, that was really sad, ill have to cope with watching re-runs!!!! :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:

Hm, not so much 'on with the new' as merging with the indistinguishable mush that is T.V. Sci-Fi these days. :( Shanks obviously saw the writing on the wall there... ...while 'the old' still has the potential to be original and inventive.

Agreed, plus he is getting a bit long in the tooth ;) If Daniel Jackson were still a regular member of S.G. -1, it could have carried on without O'Neill, but without both the original characters, that is a little more difficult.

I also agree with what you say about fatherhood. (Fishermen who are at sea for weeks at a time come to mind).

However, my father, who was superbly fit, and an active tennis, golf and badminton player, dropped dead on the morning of his 57th birthday so, as RDA is in his fifties, I can see where he's coming from there.

And it would still be possible for him to do both if he had a different position in the show - taking a 'Hammond' role with another S.G. team, for instance. Office scenes (walls, table, chairs, etc.) could be set up and shot anywhere in the country.

Stargate could have maintained its freshness quite ably, had it had guiding lights and thoughts that went beyond the immediate 'moneymaking' aspect of the show. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has managed it. Oh you are so right there, Anni! It is quite maddening. :angryfire - because it doesn't have to be that way...!

I am sad for that, because it held so much potential.

Oh, it still has that potential, Anni, and given the will to make a go of it, I am certain it could run for several more series. The trouble is that T.P.T.B. are up too close to see the bigger picture :(

I find the fans' ideas and fanfics surrounding the Stargate universe to be far more fasinating and interesting.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!!!! <enthusiastically jumping up and down, Danny style ;) > This just shows how much more scope there is for 'Stargate S.G.-1' to go on and on, and how much interest and enthusiasm there is out there for the programme and the concept. If only T.P.T.B. would just take a good look around and see what they've got. Aaargh!

Oh, well, back to the fan fic., then...

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut

I know this feeling from my theater work. After building, loading-in, teching and running a show for eight weeks the wrap on the last night can be the biggest let down or the penultimate relief. It all depends on how much BS I had to put up with from cast, cues, props, or even the set itself. And we did six shows a year so after seven years you get real used to it. A career in the performance arts an emotional rollercoaster. I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that this is the saddest moment in your life! Sadder is not working at all and watching what you've worked so hard for fade away. You had a taste of those shifting sands with the Battlestar Galaxtia thing. I've had hundreds of people telling me to carry on and keep my chin up these last months, I'd pay it forward to you right now. Keep your chin up and know that the next gig for someone with so much experience is so much eaiser to get.

It ain't over yet

Geez...Sorry didn't mean to sound like the end of the world, possibly not even the end of Stargate, I just wanted to relay the fact that in my fifteen years of film and television work, nothing has ever come close to the spirit of camaraderie and kinship I have felt with almost everyone connected to our show.
As you probably know we work here at SG-1 for about nine and a half months a year, in between seasons most of us will go to work on other projects. The working atmosphere on those between season shows is usually a cold reminder of what awaits us after the gate shuts down.
I did not mean to bring everybody down, only to express what a wonderful experience the past six years have been.
On a more positive note, it ain't over till the fat lady sings.
Atlantis is still a strong possibility.
Cheers to all.

Hey Boydo!

Don't worry, I guess we're all just sad that Stargate as we knew has ended and now the last season is probably all that will be awaiting us. I hope you can enjoy the last months though and that you'll find something as wonderful as SG-1 when the final curtain has fallen.
Best wishes...Summer (who's still hoping they'll shoot a feature film)

For what it's worth, it's been tough on the fans, too. We don't really get alot of info other than rumors while TPTB decide on who will stay, who will go, where the show will be filmed, planning the spin-off, possible movies . . .

and I do think tact and finess have pretty much been missing over the last year in handling all of these things . . .

tough on all of the Stargate family.

Boydo, I think I saw that oneness even from the sidelines of Gatecon and sort of envy it. The actors remain such good friends after parting from the show, I have to think the tech people will be the same. You've also got a bit more experienced than I knew. :D So tell us more about it!

Relax...

It's okay, Boudo. What you're seeing here is a sympathetic audience. A lot of folks here have worked in similar trades and can identify with what's going on. I have, to a small extent, but I can see it from the point of view of being military. It's like being assigned to a post somewhere for a few years and then, at the end of that tour of duty, leaving it all behind and moving on to someplace new.

You didn't bring any of us down. In fact, you gave us a gift. You shared something with us, something that meant a lot to you.

Thank you for that, in so many ways. ;)
