It's a lot riskier than DS9, or Voyager simply because the creators of this show know that anything they do will be watched by hawklike fans.

Oh I don't know. Most ST history has been invented by sad Trekkies, not by an official policy unit from P'mount. As such they have entered folklore that may or may not be proven correct now Enterprise is there to show history as it really was in the future.

Besides 'Retro' is in fashion, so it doesn't matter too much what the rabid Trekky claims.

You can even get 'Retro' styled bakelite radios and televisions, lovingly cased in real chipboard and oak paper veneer, just like the ones Granny and Grandad never had, but everybody thinks they did, to watch it on.

Do you mean that whatever the premise of series five, it would be inherently more risky because of the potential fan reaction?

I had the impression that fans in general had little respect for Voyager, yet it managed to last the seven seasons. As for DS9, I liked it, but according to another thread in these forums (I think related to a DS9 movie) it had very poor ratings...

This would suggest to me that fan disapproval means little.
