Best Gemmell book?

The best gemmell book is by far is Sword In The Storm, followed closely by Midnight Falcon and The Legend Of Deathwalker. Pure battle driven fantasty Brilliant!

I think it will always be Legend for me. No matter how much more technically adept he gets or how he improves on his characterisation, he'll never better the pathos he works into Legend's final chapters. It's the only one of his books I can read whenever I feel the urge, without feeling that it has diminished since the last reading...

Waylander's a possible exception...

legend. its still my fav. i liked knights of dark renown as well. but legend mostly. seribitor in particular :)

i gave my Dad the new Gemmell, Troy, for his bday and he said it's really awesome (not that there was any doubt!) but i do think Legend will always be Gemmell's #1 classic.

i have issues with the troy thing. i studied classics for 7 years, so i find it hard to read books by people set in that time (or films) because if htey get it wrong, i get snarky! :) that and i never enjoyed the troy story. there are so many others that i prefer that would make great fantasy books.

Having not long ago re-read some of his books, I would add Waylander as one of his best books, along with Legend and The Quest For Lost Heroes.

I much preferred Ravenheart to Sword. The emotion and passion in Ravenheart is still gut-wrenching even after the 10th read.

Give it a try ;) Firstly David really does do his research, and secondly, while it's the story of Troy, it's not a re-writing of the classic story, it's about characters who didn't get the main focus and uses Troy as the backdrop.

Finally, it's historical fiction based on historical myth and fiction, so there's always going to be plenty of room for interpretation.

yeah, i like king beyond the gate, too. its maybe my second fav, along with the waylander stuff. i do like waylander. i know he has a lot of tortuered men who become reluctant heros, but waylander was teh most vivid of those

hmm, im still not sure about the troy stuff, cos there is also the element that i am kinda sick of the whole troy myth after 7 years of studying it! :) but i might, when i have more cash and feel more in a reading mood :)

I agree as well. The Rigante books are probably Gemmell's best. The story was superb and I also felt it was an subtle copy of the struggle between the Scottish and English for Scotland's right to be a free nation. That was one of the reasons I appreciated the books so much.
However, White Wolf was also a classic, the character of Skilgannon was inspiring. I've just started reading a new one of his, "Troy", which started slow but develops into a thrilling story.

i always wante dhim to write the twin story, the one that would go after quest for lost heros. he never did tho, did he? cos i think that would have been really interesting!

I just read Knights of Dark Renown.... really liked it! But the rigante novels are still the best for me - Ravenheart over all, and all you guys who are saying Jaim Grymauch is the best character, you're right! He's brilliant!

finished quest for lost heroes and now on to waylander something i dont qutie get is it set before legend???

because its got Egel, Karnak, etc... as young people. i'm confused

waylander is set before legend yeah. as is the first skilgangon book. he didnt write them in chronological order

didn't like king beyond the gate. mostly cos the rape. it disturbed me FAR too much, the idea of those men raping that girl who they had looked after as a child. but i did love how gemmell commented on that. he's pretty good, actually, at seeing things from a female point of view

knights of dark renown ---followed by the king beyond the gate and morningstar
