Just thinking about the old P.O.O. discussions in a few of the other threads.
We have seen that some planets use diagrammatic P.O.O. glyphs, (Earth-Giza, Earth-Antarctica, Abydos, Gamekeeper-world), whilst others use constellations (P3R-233, okay - most of the others shown in the series!).
If there are more than about 38 planets who use a constellation, we must assume that more than 38 constellations are used - which is pretty much stated in the film.
Now, we must remember that this is not necessarily consistent with the SG-1 series, since we don't know if the gate was supposed to go anywhere else in the film. Either way, if there are more than 38 constellation glyphs in use across the entire network of gates, it means that some gates won't be able to connect to others, either all or some of the time (dependent on stellar drift and changing addresses).
I would suggest that this is unlikely, given the rest of the technology we have seen; the gates "should" be able to go from and to every/anywhere in the network.
Therefore, two possible options:
a) each constellation glyph can be used by more than one planet as a P.O.O. - no real reason why not, except for confusion. It has been suggested/discussed elsewhere (by me! ) that the P.O.O. is mostly symbolic and acts as a terminator in some of the protocols. The actual picture on the glyph is pretty irrelevant, but is perhaps used to prevent primitive cultures from stumbling on the secret of the gates.
b) there ARE only about 38 planets using constellational P.O.O. glyphs, and we are just happening to see most of them. This is quite possible, since (reality-wise) it means the art dept. don't need to create too many new glyphs, they just use the existing ones on the DHD in a different location!! It would also (theoretically) mean that for seasoned gate-travellers the P.O.O. is quite easy to spot, as not one of the regular symbols. This is sort of implied by Daniel in a number of places, e.g. Chulak, where we don't actually see the glyph!
c) or a combination of the two...
