One of the disadvantages to acting in a long-running series is that the character has to be able to grow and change, but not so much that it isn't the same character anymore. For some actors this can be stifling even though it means a steady paycheck.

Science fiction's great advantage is that plots are not limited to our regular terrestrial reality -- so there can be stories showing vast variations in character, including love affairs both past, future and alternate, death and resurrection, beloved heroes becoming villains for a time, and so on.
