Hey, you, were you a child of the 80s like me? How much did you love He-Man. I believe I even had the action figures and everything!

www.comicbookresources.com reports that a new animated series is on its way to Cartoon Network for August.

HE-MAN & THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

Although it's not based on a comic book He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a favorite of Comics2Film readers. Cartoon Network announced earlier this week that the toy-based hero concept is slated to return to television in an all-new series of animated adventures.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will make its Cartoon Network debut at 4 p.m. (ET, PT) on Friday, August 16 with a 90-minute special featuring the never-before-told story of the origin of He-Man. Beginning August 23, the 26-episode series will begin airing on Fridays during Toonami. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will join the daily Toonami line-up in November.

Cartoon Network provides this description of the concept: "Eternia is a land of myth, sorcery and advanced technology where epic heroes accomplish remarkable deeds, strange creatures roam the land, and malevolent enemies wreak havoc. Deep within Castle Grayskull lies the repository of universal knowledge hidden long ago by the Elders of Eternia. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe defend Castle Grayskull and all of Eternia from the tyrannical Skeletor and his Evil Warriors."

On Friday, August 16, the 90-minute movie premiere will tell the story of how Prince Adam became He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, for the very first time. The original He-Man series was introduced to television audiences in 1983 and became one of the most successful kids entertainment properties in history.

So kids, mark that date off in your diary right now!

I think I liked him better when he was all cowardly ;)

I wonder if SHe-Ra is on her way back too?

Some weird news from the He-Man camp

He-Man Sticks Neck Out

Dean Stefan, story editor for Cartoon Network's upcoming new He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, told SCI FI Wire that the updated show will explore the struggles of supporting characters, not just He-Man. One episode, for example, deals with Mek-a-Nek's identity crisis, he said in an interview.

"We would joke around that he's surrounded by all these fantastic guys, but basically he has the power to stretch his neck," Stefan said. "How would you feel if you were the guy like the punter on the football team? He's the little guy, all he can do is stretch his neck, how would that feel? So that became the basis of a story. Mek-a-Nek thinks his powers suck. What would he do about that?" The episode deals with Mek-a-Nek's fear that he's obsolete within the group. "A really funny twist is Prince Adam says, 'Mek-a-Nek, you're important. You do reconnaissance. You're like the periscope.' Next thing you know, Man-at-Arms has created a new device and says, 'This does reconnaissance and sees over things.' So the one power he's got is invalidated."

Stefan promises that each episode of He-Man will be based on character needs, not just on action scenes. "All the stories are anchored in an inner need of the character or a story arc, as you'd say," he said. "I think that only makes the kick-ass battles richer, because if you don't care about the characters, it doesn't matter how much action there is." He-Man and the Masters of the Universe airs Friday afternoons as part of Toonami.

It's all very well having a new series of He-Man, but there are a few things I expect from it:
At the end of every episode, our hero needs to turn to the camera and tell us that it might seem cool to moon at passers by, but if you do it during the wrong planetary alighnment, people get hurt.

And, of course, they'll have to make a cheesy spin-off movie produced by a couple of hacks, and starring the girl from Misfits of Science and the guy who played the punisher.

Let's not forget the action toys, around which each episode is written.

Otherwise it won't be Masters of the Universe.

From what I can remember of the series (going some way back though!), it was rather good the way it was
