Anderson arrives in Century 21.

Puppetmaster and sci-fi TV deity Gerry Anderson has revealed three new fantasy animation projects he's planning to roll out over the next two-and-a-half years.

Anderson, perhaps best known as the creator of Thunderbirds, began his career in puppetry by accident, when his keenness to become a filmmaker led him to accept a contract to produce a series of Roberta Leigh's children's stories, entitled The Adventures of Twizzle. Now, at 73, Gerry has fully embraced today's dazzling CGI techniques to fashion new action adventures in the style of his 1960's puppet shows but with no strings attached.

Speaking from Pinewood Studios, Gerry described the latest phase of his now 45-year career. "We started this company called Anderson Entertainment, and we had a request from Japan that we should create a television series for them. We created a series called Firestorm. That is now in production in Japan and also in Santa Monica. In Japan, it'll be on the air in October. It's a combination of 2D animation and CGI. The flat animation is being done in Tokyo, the CGI is being done in Santa Monica and we are in Pinewood keeping our eye on everything via broadband telephone, email and also going to Tokyo once every other month."

A second project, Eternity, also commissioned by Japanese television, is being negotiated. "The Japanese intention is to make it into a television series first and then into a feature film made at Pinewood," Gerry said.

The third project, which is headed directly for UK television, is sure to divide Gerry's fans. "We've been granted the rights by Carlton Television to remake Captain Scarlet. This will be made in CGI. The characters will be exactly the same but everything else will be updated and redesigned. It's going to take us about two-and-a-quarter years. Our working title is The New Captain Scarlet."

It's nice to know that, after tempting the children of the 60's with futuristic visions of Century 21, Gerry Anderson is embracing the technology of the real 21st Century to entertain new generations of children.
