Kevin Sorbo has swapped that Hercules’ costume for a space ship commander’s uniform and left ancient Greece (aka New Zealand) to head far into the future. FOX8 has exclusive rights for his new series Andromeda, which launches the channel’s new Saturday night line-up on August 3.
Set in deep space, Andromeda follows the adventures of Captain Dylan Hunt (Sorbo) and his crew in their efforts to re-unite the diverse cultures of the known worlds and restore a great and peaceful civilisation.
In Episode One, the Andromeda Ascendant, the pride of the Commonwealth fleet, is caught in an ambush. Dylan gives the order to abandon ship, while he remains on board and boldly steers it into a black hole to avoid certain destruction. 300 years later, the crew of the salvage ship Eureka Maru free the Andromeda from the black hole. Dylan “wakes†to learn the ambush was the start of a war, which destroyed the Commonwealth’s peaceful rule over three galaxies and he is now centuries away from his fiance and family.
In the course of the early episodes, he recruits the Eureka Maru crew to join him on his quest. Beka Valentine (Lisa Ryder) becomes first officer although she hopes Dylan will see the futility of his quest and she will be able to redirect him to more lucrative pursuits. Tyr Anasazi (Keith Hamilton Cobb) is genetically engineered to be the ultimate survivor, stronger and faster than a normal human. Rev Bem (Brent Stait) is a member of an alien race, known for savageness and feared throughout the galaxy. Ironically, he is a peaceful soul - a scientist, linguist and priest. Engineer and fix-it man Seamus Harper (Gordon Michael Woolvett) is the only crew member born and raised on Earth. He communicates mostly through sarcasm and wisecracks. Trance Gemini (Laura Bertram) is a young alien with an elfish appearance. She comes from an advanced civilisation and believes she is superior to her crew mates yet feels responsible for protecting them. The final member of Dylan’s crew is the ship herself. The Andromeda Ascendant (Lexa Doig) resembles a person in many ways and is able to interact with the crew using her voice and a "public appearance" body. Although her brain is a computer, she is as alive as the rest of the crew.
