It's a Wonderful Life. (1946)

This the Frank Capra directed film starring James Stewart. One of my favourite films and arguably Capra's best and most typical work.

It's Christams Eve in Bedford Falls. George Bailey has spent his entire life giving up his own big dreams for the good of other people in his town. But as events turn from bad to worse, he is suicidal over the misplacing of an $8000 loan. It seems that the evil millionaire, Mr. Potter, has finally broken him.

As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his elderly Guardian Angel, Clarence, instead, who has been sent to help him. In a "Christams Carol"-like, 'Ghost of Christmas Past' way, Clarence then takes George back through his life to show him how his town, family, and friends would have turned out if he had never been born. For instance, he damaged his hearing when he saved his brother from drowning, so that his brother became a great war hero, while he stayed home. Without George lending money without security, the town would now be a much darker Pottersville. George's kindness meant so much to so many people, and he is made to realise that all his good deeds over the years were worth the sacrifices he has made.

For me, this is probably the best holiday film made, next to Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol (1938) movie (my favorite version). It's a Wonderful Life is one of those films where you can't stop watching it, you can get so involved with James Stewart's character and his frends.
