NATIONAL COMICS AWARDS HONOR DC CREATORS AND PROJECTS

On June 1, the winners of the National Comics Awards were named at the U.K.’s Comics 2002 convention in Bristol, including three DC Comics creators. As in the past, the Awards committee provided not only the winners but also nine runners up in each category.

We congratulate all the winners, and thank British retailers and fans for their support.

I was really surprised by that, actually. But then bear in mind that the "national" in "National Comics Awards" is referring to Britain, so perhaps it is more understandable from that perspective.

I laughed out loud when I read that Gnasher had won best supporting character :D
 
Oh! I don't know. The characters in Beano have been going as long as any of the superheroes, yet have suffered none of their often painful re-inventions. To my mind it makes Beano timeless in its appeal, so deserves a first.

I understand it still sells over 100K copies a week as well, a figure that most comics would love to see on their sales stats over any financial time period, so it is not exactly unpopular either.
(The dog-eared copy I have in my possession shows an ABC rated circulation of 163,787, though it is a couple of years old)
