Inner Gate Wheel

I've been wondering for a while about how the inner gate wheel works when it comes to incoming wormholes. When dialling out the wheel turns in order to move the glyphs to the corresponding chevrons. But when a wormhole is incoming, does it need to do the same thing in order to open? In most episodes, the wheel turns for a few seconds, locks one chevron and then opens. I'd have thought that it would need to dial all of the incoming planet's symbols in order to open. If that is the case, how would the gate know which symbols to key in when the wormhole hasn't opened yet?

Am I getting confused or making any sense here?:(

I think I'd have to review a few eps to see exactly what you are describing. It could be nothing more than the way scenes are cut -- leaving out extraneous tech stuff while everyone is running around yelling "off-world activation" and "in-coming wormhole."

But if the ring does turn for all 7 symbols of an off-world activation, is that a sort of stargate caller-ID? ;)

You may have noticed I often have some sort of answer in this Technical sub-forum. ;)

On this question, I am afraid, I will be quick to say "no idea" and have often wondered the same thing myself. I would guess that it simply spins to indicate that the wormhole is incoming and that the dialling protocol is underway.

I would suggest that much of the problem is to do with TV editing: we can't be 100% sure of the exact sequencing of the two ends of the wormhole. What I mean is, when we cut from start to end, is it actually at the same time, or not? We have certainly seen examples in episodes where it is (probably) several seconds between cuts, despite no apparent passed time on screen.

There is another thread which has considered the likely dialling sequence. Other thread discussing the inner ring and dialling protocol
