Just what the title says! It wasn't that bad! Stupid video standards people they don't have a clue! And whilst we are on the subject, how did Titanic get a 12 rating when Shrek got a u or pg?!?

18

It may not have been bad to you, but if I had kids, I wouldn't want them to see THAT scene! It's not just the nudity, it's the scene of a Goa'uld snake writhing over a naked woman and then punching through her back. Not only is it scary, but when you think about it, it could be seen a metaphorical for something else if you catch my drift "nudge, nudge". I don't watch it that often for the sheer fact that if a member of my family caught me watching it then they'd think I was a filthy pervert watching a porno movie! So I think the 18 Certificate is justified!

Naturally my adolescent son noticed that DVD version of COTG was rated "R" and said not a word about it. So we were -- well, certainly surprised when that particular scene appeared. It had not been shown during the original broadcast and to my knowledge was only shown on Showtime, which we don't get.

Most networks cut that scene in whole or in part. (US TV tries to be morally pure -- except for politics and corporations :D ) The rating in no way prevents the viewing of the contents. However, for those parents who had watched the show on broadcast and are settling down to watch the DVD with young children (or elderly relatives  ) it is good to know if one must explain graphic anatomical appearances. ;)

rating

It recieved the rating becasue of full frontal nudity and the snake.

Ratings are meant to act as a guideline, not a total restriction.

The "industry" has some very fine gradations of "nuditude" -- ranging from shadowy outlines and camera angles to the full monty. Generally, once you get to the bush, you're in the "R" rating arena.

In "Titanic" Rose was "artfully naked" and that was it -- nothing like the scene in COTG, which had far more disturbing elements than just skin.

titanic certianly had nudity but it was more in the guise of telling the story.

shau'ri was nude for shock value only. and add to that fact that while she was nude she was basically raped by the snake.

the first time i saw it was on broadcast tv, so i saw the edited version, jsut like with the soldier, they implied her nudity without having to show it to all of us. to me that was just as effective.

rose's nudity in titanic was not only more 'classily' done, it was also an important plot point.

Thanks guys, I have never seen the version with *that* scene in it so I was unaware of it! Also, u r not allowed into a film that is over your age group so therefore it is the law and not just a guideline - I know from personal experience! which btw I do not think is fair! It should b up 2 parents

I'm not certain where you are -- laws vary according to jurisdiction.

The case in point, a Region 1 DVD rated "R" (at least in the US), is still a matter of parental guidance since it is for home viewing and not for broadcast.

And as for broadcast -- well, even those of us far over age 18 did not see the scene in question on the TV because it was cut, presumably to protect our delicate sensibilities.

No, it really doesn't make a lot of sense . . . ;)

i think it was because in titanic, besides the fact there was the same amount of skin shown, it was the nature of it. titanic was consentual, and all cute and lovey dovey. cotg was non-consentual and had that kinky element to it.

apophis was advocating rape, and the idea that women exist purely for his pleasure. i certainly wouldnt want kids seeing it. whereas titanic was pretty harmless in comparison.

This depends on country. AIUI in the UK the rating is a restriction, and breach of it (i.e. supplying videos/DVDs to people under the age) results in criminal prosecution.

For people in the UK, if they want to know why a particular episode (or even film) has been rated, try going to the site of the UK censor, the BBFC. They have a great search engine which lets you search for any title they have rated.

Incidentally, there was 7m56s cut between the PG and 18 rated versions in the UK.
