I keep hearing this show mentioned, and with some affection. As I live in England - where it hasn't seen the light of day - I know little about it except its title and the names of the two lead characters, so could someone explain please:

1. Where does the title come from? Are they guarding something?

2. What's the premiss of the programme - the aims of the characters, their raison d'être and such like?

3. What's the sci-fi aspect of the programme?

Thanks :)

(I read a lot of Stargate fan fiction and see references to 'The Sentinel' in quite a few cross-overs. I'd like to read them, but I need some clues as to where the writers are coming from.)

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut

The title "The Sentinel" comes from, I guess, Blair Sandburg's research. He's an anthropologist and has been studying 'Sentinels' of (ancient?) tribal groups in South America(?) [It's been a while since I've watched some of the eps, so I'm not 100% on everything.]

A Sentinel is a 'guardian' of sorts. In the case of this show, the Sentinels have 'hyper-active' sensory perception - above average sight, taste, touch, hearing, smell. Jim Ellison has these abilities. And he's a cop, so, in a sense, he's the 'guardian' of Cascade, Washington.

2. What's the premiss of the programme - the aims of the characters, their raison d'être and such like?

The premise? Jim's a cop and he's trying, each week, to solve whatever crime has popped up. Blair, he's a grad student/doctoral student at Rainer (sp? - sorry) Univ and is working on his thesis about Sentinels, so he's chosen Jim as his prime subject.

3. What's the sci-fi aspect of the programme?

Sci-fi aspect would be the heightened senses. Jim's almost 'super human' in that regard.

Thanks :)

If you want some good Sentinel fic - you might try the Sentinel Virtual Series done by 'Faux Paws Productions' (sorry, don't have a link on me, but there is a link to it on my website - link to that in my sig)

Hope that helped.

Yes, thanks a lot, H2. :) That's just what I wanted to know. :D

P.S. The top site you mentioned no longer exists - allegedly.

Night Owl is still there. It takes *ages* to load but is worth waiting for :)
