Virginia Hey was asked:
Q. What, if any, type of preparation do you do for the times when Zhaan is dealing with her dark side?
A. Hmm the dark side, good question, let's see... To tell you the truth, on set I throw myself completely into how I imagine Zhaan is feeling at every second in the particular scene. The directors help me if I waver off track, but if you stick to the script and a total honesty in what you are portraying, you tend to make sense hopefully. I can't mimic this evil from my own life obviously, but I can access the deep pool of emotional memory I hold as a person of many years of creativity, complexity and depth of expression. I access a deep feeling and build on it to adapt it to the situation. It's hard to explain actually.. I have no particular method apart from honesty in emotion. Hope this makes sense.. So I don't watch horror movies or access theory.. I build it and invent it from my imagination and store of underlying emotional resources. After all there is always a weighty and desperate conflict which sits at the core of the evil which torments Zhaan. The conflict is the thing I invent as the foundation, then I build from there.
