Writer resources

Really, Brian. Thanks for all your work here at Chronicles Network! Where do you find the time?

You rock, man!

:D

It's alright - I was only kidding - my ego is not that fragile. :)

At 160+ unique views, I know people have seen this thread - I simply hope that the information compiled on the page in question actually proves useful to anyone seeking publishing.

Brian can i reccomend a book on writing to add on there? Well it's more grammar than anything but is extremely helpful for perfecting english....The Elements of Style By: William Strunk and EB White. An amazing book on what and what not to do in English. Strunk was a professor at Oxford and he made his own textbook because there wasn't one supplied. It only got published after he died and EB White revised it since he was one of Strunk's students...Well just a suggestion.

Strunk and White is a classic -- at least in the US. For years, it was considered the one book that every professional writer should have on his or her bookshelf. Many major publishing houses used it as their style book. This last no longer seems to be the case. The perception may be that it's a little out-dated. Nevertheless, I suspect that any writer who was anybody ten or fifteen or twenty years ago is still using it.

I don't think a writer could possibly go wrong using Strunk and White (though you could still be copy-edited to conform to house style).

Not read it yet - I think I've ordered a couple of dozen books from Amazon this year and only had time to flick through a couple.

I'm still planning to overhaul this site sometimes, so I'll probably leave detail changes for when I change the overall site.

But it will likely be on the list of book recommendations. :)

Which reminds me that Strunk and White was on the list of essential books for writers they passed out at the San Francisco Writers Conference last month.

Some other books on the list:

The Complete Guide to Writing Fiction , Barnaby Conrad, Writer's Digest Books

How to Get Happily Published: A Complete and Candid Guide, Judith Applebaum, HarperCollins

How to Write a Book Proposal, Michael Larsen, Writer's Digest Books

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life, Anne Lamott, Pantheon Books

On Writing Well, William Zinsser, HarperPerennial

1001 Ways to Market Your Books, John Kremer, Open Horizons

The Writer's Workbook: A Full and Friendly Guide to Boosting Your Book's Sales, Judith Applebaum and Florence Janovic, Sensible Solutions

Literary Agents: What They Do, How They Do It, and How to Find and Work with the Right One for You, , revised and expanded, Michael Larsen, John Wiley & Sons

How to Publish a Book & Sell a Million Copies, Ted Nicholas, Enterprise-Dearborn

Two more books I'd add to that list:

The Art of Dramat!c Wr!t!ing by Lajos Egri

On Writing by Stephen King.

I just finished the King book and found it helpful and entertaining. Egri's book I read many years ago, but I remember it to be very inspiring.

I have it on my "to re-read" shelf and plan to give it another look soon.

Yup On writing was a great accomplishment by him. It starts with his life and how he started writing, the gifted storyteller he is, he sucks you right in. Then it gets onto the serious stuff, which was really helpful.

Damn good mind, you put together some of the most useful things a writer could use. I'm book marking that!

Great resources, but I can't seem to get onto them any more. The link directs me back to the homepage now, but I can't find them from there. Any hints?

I'd say it has something to do with the site renovations currently taking place, Brys. Give it a few days, and I'm sure Brian will have it up and running again...

something i have discovered, if you are writing about a real place and want info, write to thier chamber of commerce, tourism board or embassy. these people will typically bend over backwards for you.
