NASA pics

Last year, we went to Novacon which is fantasy convention. One of the guest speakers was Inge Heyer from N.A.S.A. who, among other things, liaises with the 'Star Trek' programme makers. Their background shots are courtesy of N.A.S.A., although adjacent shots on the programme are not necessarily adjacent in the sky

She also talked about the next generation extra terrestrial telescope which will be way out, beyond the Moon I.I.R.C., so if anything goes wrong with that, it won't be just a quick trip up in the shuttle to fix it. The astronauts' (astronuts'?) response to this was, "Cool! When do we go?"

She worked on the Hawaiian telescope array for about 6 years, and had loads of funny stories to tell about that. You tend to suffer from oxygen deprivation up there which has strange effects on the brain. Astronomers were jury-rigging an additional bit of kit. One guy kept sawing small bits of wood from a length of timber to cut it down to size, and getting more and more frustrated.

"It doesn't matter how much I cut off, it just keeps getting shorter!" he exclaimed...

Best wishes,
Hatshepsut

P.S. Inge also brought along about a dozen piles of 10" x 8" colour photographs taken by the Hubble to give away free. Brilliant!
