Did it bug anyone else that the Sword that was broken was not re-made in Rivendell like in the book? Why not?! I recall reading somewhere that Arwen is gonna show up at Helms Deep (along with Elrond - Why?!) With the new and improved Anduril. All I see here is a big ol' opening for a soppy love scene between Aragorn and Elf-on-the-side in the middle of the battle.

How romantic.

not.

:flash:

it might be a part they had to cut out cos the film was too long

Actually I think it might be a good move.

Aragorn was less than ready to assume the role as heir to the throne at Rivendell. But the loss of Gandalf forced him to accept what was coming

Nah I din think so. I would have preferred to see him with it from the start, almost like a reminder of what he has to do from the beginning.
:flash:

I can't remember much of Arwen in the book..I know I know...but I'm starting to read it yet again...when does she actually appear...since she wasn't really supposed to be the one to take Frodo to Rivendell when being chased by the Black Riders

If my memory serves me, she was only mentioned in TFOTR, and doesn't really have much of a part until the end of TROTK. But I could be wrong on this, though I'm almost certain that she doesn't have any part in TTT at all.

Welcome back Data!:)

You are absolutely correct. Arwen does only appear briefly in both FOTR and ROTK.

By and large females figure very little in any of the books. Look at how little there is of Eowan, yet she is a major player in preventing the fall of Gondor itself.

Considering when the books were written in the first place it's not really that hard to see why females are mostly in the background. Most Sci-Fi/Fantasy books of that era where the same way. They might have expanded Arwen's role a bit to compensate for that.

But why can't they just portray it the way Tolkien invisioned it!?Why do they have to worry about political correctness and **** like that?

Arwen's last appearance in FOTR is actually quite truncated. She opens her mouth in council as if it say something to Aragorn, looks daggers at her father, the end.

It looks like a set up for another scene, that either JRRT forgot to write, couldn't think of something to add, or did and threw away.

Certainly I thought little of it when I first read the books, and was a little surprised at Aragorn's reaction to Eowen when she came on strong, who in his own words was 'the most beautiful possesion of Rohan' (Okay I am male and young then).

The films treatment of the afair between Aragorn and Arwen is handled far better.

ok I've seen some more trailers now, and so long as there isn't a kissy-yum-yum-eat-yer-parters-face scene in the middle of the battle of helms deep, I'm happy ;)
