Okay let me get this straight.

First, Ra was the strongest system lord. But then he got killed.

Next came Sokar right. he was banished but then came back a became powerful.

Then, Apophis went and killed Sokar and absorbed his army and got really strong. but then he gets killed right?

So now comes Anubis. He was banished but then he found out a way to get better technology and now he is the most powerful.

Who's Who...

So far as I can tell, something like that. ;)

Apophis also killed Heru'ur, absorbed his army and therefor became the most powerful goa'uld

It seems that we need ever more powerful and more evil system lords for SG1 to defeat, but we know that in the end SG1 will triumph because . . . because . . . because --

its a TV series and the cast must go on to bigger and better things and right over might, and good over evil, etc. The villain always must have a flaw or weakness to exploit, because if not then someday we'll face the problem then of the unstoppable cannon ball firing at the indestructable wall.

We also get the impression that parts of this would have been happening even without SG-1 making it easier by killing pretty much every System Lord they come across...

Osiris was over-thrown, de-hosted and trapped in her jar, Hathor was en-sarcophagused, and Seth was forced to hide-out on Earth, though this later became a good thing.

The battles between Apophis and Heru'ur were on-going at the time of SG-1 being formed, and many of the subsequent encounters have implied pre-existing battles, encounters, alliances, breaches and reversals of loyalty amongst the System Lords.

It just isn't a job with a long term future... :p

What a good thing for Earth that the System Lords hate each other more than they hate us! Bad day for the SGC when the Goa'uld all get on one side. :D
