The Shrinking man by Richard Matheson
A Matter of Size by Henry Hesse.
Small Worlld by Tabitha King.
And a bunch of kids books.

i am have interested in sub atomics microscopic shrinking. Mainly people brought down to 3 feet, 6 inches, 1 inch and the like. Writen in a non porn adult manner. Please suggest.

Could try Fantastic Voyage volumes 1 and 2 (Asimov). Quite different to the films

There's always the classic "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" starring Rick Moranis, who was the nerdy guy in the Ghostbusters movies and also in that weird musical movie with the man-eating plant. I don't know if it has any books related to it, but it might.

That weird musical with the man-eating plant is called Littles Shop of Horrors. Wonderful musical. My new school did it a few years ago and all of myfriends were always referring to it, as they had all been involved in the production in one way or another. So, I had to watch it to understand what they were saying. I watched it with one of them, and he knew the plot to well and I guess he got a bit bored with watching it so I sort of missed a bit in the middle for some funny reason.... :rolly2:

Films?

I know ZachWZ wanted book ideas, but I'd be interested if anyone knows any 'Live-Action' as opposed to animated films concerning shrinking and small people.

These are the ones that I know of:

Honey I Shrunk the Kids - (1989) A bumbling inventor inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbour kids, must journey back across their own backyard to get back to the right height. [Dir: Joe Johnson, Cast: Rick Moranis, Matt Fewer.]

Inner Space - (1987) A pilot is miniaturized and then accidentally injected into a timid grocery store clerk. Together, the must prevent thieves who want to steal the formula. [Dir: Joe Dante, Cast: Dennis Quaid, Martin Short.]

Fantastic Voyage - (1966) A team of doctors and a submarine are miniaturized an injected into a top scientist to save his life. [Dir: Richard Fleischer, Cast: Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welsh, Edmond O'Brien, Donald Pleasence.]

Tom Thumb - (1958) Comedy. A tiny forest boy outwits some thieves. [Dir: George Pal, Cast: Russ Tamblyn, Jessie Matthews, Peter Sellers, Terry Thomas.]

Incredible Shrinking Man, The - (1957) After being caught in a radioactive mist and man shrinks inexorably to micro-size. [Dir: Jack Arnold, Cast: Grant Williams, Randy Stuart.] Based on the Richard Matheson book.

Girl in his Pocket - (1957) An eccentric scientist discovers a method for shrinking people, and uses his girlfriend as a guinea pig. A French sci-fi comedy. [Cast: Jean Marais, Genevieve Page, Jean Claude Brialy.]

Devil Doll, The - (1936) A man who escapes from Devil's Island disguises himself as an old lady who sells human dolls which murder those responsible for his imprisonment. The doll is created by a shrinking process. [Dir: Todd Browning, Cast: Lionel Barrymore, Maureen O'Sulivan.]

I've seen all those except the French film 'Girl in his Pocket'.

On TV there was also Irwin Allen's 'Land of the Giants'. Jonathan Swift's book 'Gulliver's Travels' includes the small people of Lilliput, but I think any attempts to film that political novel have been animations aimed at children.

You missed the clunker The Incredible Shrinking Woman:
After being exposed to a bizarre mixture of household chemicals, Pat Kramer begins to shrink. This baffles scientists, makes parenting difficult, warms the hearts of Americans, and captures the attention of a group of people who want to take over the world. This evil group plots to kidnap Pat and perform experiments on her so that they can eventually shrink everyone.

Never saw the original Devil Doll (was it any good?), but do remember a remake or two: Devil Doll (1964), Black Devil Doll From Hell (1984). Both were pretty ghastly.

Considering that most of the others were considered pretty poor, it doesn't raise a lot of hope for next years remake of The Incredible Shrinking Man?

On TV there was also the BBC's childrens show The Borrowers

There's a very good collection of shorter works by Larry Niven called "N-Space". It contains one story called "Convergent Series" that you might like to read. Sorry, but I can't write any of the details; writing anything would spoil the story.

I'd forgotten about the punchline to 'Convergent Series', I have it as part of an older collection actually called 'Convergent Series'.

I saw 'Devil Doll' on TV one afternoon, it was very unsettling and genuinely horrific, even though it was an ancient film.

I didn't know there was an 'Incredible Shrinking Woman', only knew of 'The Attack of the 50ft Woman'.

It is strange how these movies are generally comedies, or at least they don't take the subject seriously. I guess that the Biology and Physics of it are dodgy, if that's an excuse.

I have found another book, but it is for children:

The Vanishment Of Thomas Tull Janet Ahlberg.

When Thomas Tull is seven years old, he stops growing and begins shrinking and shrinking and shrinking.
