How would you write a political intrigue?

I am currently working on a sort of fantasy story except that it is most likely a political struggle, and much alike to the English court (the only reason of that is because I am reading English history.......). How would you shape the characters? Should I put more words on dialogs or internal conflicts? How complicated should the plot be? I have two versions, one sort of simple and one VERY complicated. When I write I always have a tendency of rushing the plot, so help me before I really stuck!

I'm actually trying to write an intrigue-driven thing myself, and I sympathise, as I've never done it before. The best bet is to cut between characters a great deal and have lots of reflection, back-story build-up and the like to stretch the simple plot and give it more layers and such. That way a simple story can go for longer, seem cleverer, and make people care more about it. Like I said though, I'm a fish out of water.
