4.5: Supersymmetry

[info from tvtome.com]

After Fred's physics article is published; she's invited to speak at a symposium where a portal opens, bringing her face to face with a demon and a dark secret about her old professor.
Meanwhile Angel visits a comic book store to try and solve the mystery and find out why someone would want Fred out of the way. While doing so, he discovers that he is a very popular character in online chatrooms.

(and i'm forgoing the 'spoiler usage' thing - don't really need it - don't need spoiler blocks w/in the ep thread, IMO - if you want 'em, I can keep adding 'em)

OK - first that 2nd 1/2 of the description is stupid - b/c that part about the chatrooms is hardly relevent to the story - (unless it's gonna be relevent later) -- I mean, yeah, he finds out, but that has little to nothing to do w/ the ep itself

This ep was really good - there was a lot going on and it holds your attention (well, it held mine) --

They struck down the Connor / Cordy thing that was beginning to rear it's ugly head - nice touch - and we got some insight into Fred - (why can't they do this w/ Dawn and/or Spike on Buffy? Why does it work for them on Angel, but not Buffy? This is so irritating).

We learn that Fred's little trip to Pylea wasn't really an accident (tho it seemed that way at the time), though, you know, I kind of think it would have been nicer if they'd left her trip an accident, however, I think we might find out that that professor was employed by W&H (honestly, it wouldn't surprise me).

Wes still, I think, loves Fred - he kind of blew off Lilah to go to Fred's lecture.

and the kicker -- Cordy asks Angel if he and she were in love...

I am committed to seeing this series over Alias which airs in the same timeslot in the Mountain Time Zone. This episode represents how good this series is getting as the characters become more dark and convoluted. Wesley's character is great this season, becoming a much more mature person, his is own serious agenda, almost a double-agent like person.

Sounds like a very good episode. I did often wonder how Fred ended up in Pylea. Can't wait to see it.

annette :D

Yeah - they said that this professor was responsible for sending Fred and about 4 other girls to other dimensions -

What disappointed me was that Angel and Co didn't seem concerned about trying to find these other girls that went missing. Isn't that normally what they do? Look for ppl who are lost? Fred was found alive, so why wouldn't they think that others might be? Even Wes didn't seem concerned about these other missing people - (though he may not have known, so he gets a reprieve) - B/c I was watching and thought for sure that Angel and Gunn would want to go find these other ppl, and I'm kind of surprised that Fred didn't bring that up as a possibility - why didn't they want to look for these other girls? And why did this prof only send female students?

Just too many questions - I still really liked the episode, this was just the one thing that really bothered me.

I liked this episode too. The fact that they killed Connor and Cordy, the fact that depite his involvement with Lilah and his striking out on his own Wesley went to see Fred's speech and helped her when she asked him. Obviously he still has feelings for her.

I was annoyed that they didn't find out more about the other missing students as well but you can only do so much in a singel episode I suppose. The look on ANgel's face when Cordy asked him if they had been in love was priceless!

I do wonder what kind of impact this could have on Fred and Gunn's relationship though...

Yeah - they can only do so much - but they could have at least had a conversation about the others - and said something about maybe trying to find them - just a reference would have been nice, but it was like 'hey, other girls went missing' and like the resonse was 'oh well, sucks to be them, let's go get this professor'

just something, you know?

I don't know anything about Pylea but isn't it a huge dimension? If thats the case, than there would be little chance of finding the others even if they're still alive.

A damn fine episode. :D They had a bit of everything. Especially all the relationships. Wes still likes Fred, Lilah is jealous, Cordy and Connor wasn't as bad as I thought (it was even interesting yet completely wrong for her), Cordy knows she likes Angel, Angel and Connor is going to be interesting. Now that evil professor guy, they did it to me again. They tell me its the professor and I assume that it was the teachers aide, grrr, nice twist by telling me who it is :p . And the end with Gunn was great, nice to know that he doesn't want to lose Fred, he'd rather sacrifice himself.

Umm - all the girls didn't go to Pylea - only Fred - or that's the way I heard it. Other students were sent to other dimensions. Why would the prof only send ppl to one? And yeah, Pylea's probably pretty big, but if this guy is sending ppl like Fred there, who's to say they would all have her ingenuity and be able to escape? the others would have remained 'cows'. And I'm not suggesting that Angel and Co would be able to find all of them, just that they could look for these girls - I'm sure Angel has a connection to some warlock somewhere who could locate them. It was more the 'compassion' part that was missing than the actual 'looking and finding' -- it didn't seem very 'Angel' for them to not even suggest trying to find these other missing ppl.

I liked this one but was a little shocked at what Gunn did in the end...I hope htey don't just brush what he did under the carpet and not mention it again.

I loved it when she said (paraphrasing) - "Remember what they said about revenge?...Well i'm the bitch!"

I shouted at the TV at the end of this ep, "Were we in love?" ep finishes, i was like "Wha?! No! Evil!"

Good ep, although i wondered why Angel didn't just take the book from the prof before (or even during) his saying the words.

xxx

I enjoyed all the comic book references this evening. Not only did we have a bona fide comic book geek (did anyone catch what Angel was reading BTW?), but Lilah says (and I am laughing at the very memory) Hulk Smash. I actually rewound my video tape to make sure that I really heard that
Also reference to Daredevil was interesting, since this very week it came out in both the UK and US - and the issue Gunn mentions is pretty much the inspiration for the Daredevil movie.

But I digress.

Fairly enjoyable episode. I liked how Fred describes her time in Pylea as happening for a reason at the beginning of the episode, as if it was her cosmic luck and lack thereof that put her through that ordeal, but allowed her to theorise about things she otherwise might never have come up with.
But then, she turns all psycho and it just doesn't seem to fit with anything that she was saying before.

Another interesting symmetry is between her relationship with Wesley (you have the experience with Revenge that might come in handy, but my Gunn would never help me with this because he doesn't have it in him - that's part of what I love about him), and then discovering that Gunn very much has it in him. Has Fred just discovered that she was loving an aspect of Gunn that just plain well didn't exist?
Is this the beginning of the end for their relationship?

And will somebody PLEASE do something about Connor's hair, I mean, it looked okay when it was wet and a little slicked, but the grown-out Beatles look is really beginning to irritate me. When is he going to pick up on some of his father's stylish ways? ;)

It was a good ep and I get the feeling that Wes is getting drawn back into the gang a little more, but that may be wishful thinking on my part cos I've always liked the ineraction between Wes and Angel

Fred - well, it was a heck of a change in pace for her wasn't it - all sweet little girlie doing her academic thing and then suddenly she goes all Rambo - I spose we have to just imagine how awful it was for her in Pylea to accept that she may be able to off the nasty professor guy - but the ending with Gunn - whoaaaa - shocker !

Only one thing to say about Connor and Cordy - eeeoooww yuk yuk and yuckity yuk (ok thats more than one thing) but no - can't be, can't happen - he is a young boy and a girlie boy at that.

Please don't tell me anything happens there - I am too scared to look ahead in the threads !!

One thing tho - Connor seemed very keen on Cordy and I wonder how much is that he likes her and how much is he'd like to 'get' her to get at Angel...........

Not bad eppy. Didn't do much for me really. Not overly keen on Fred but had to laugh when she said "I'm the bitch" when referring to the revenge. Was quite shocked to see Gunn snap the neck of the professor and then throw him into the portal.

Still not liking the Cordy/Connor thing, glad she tried to put him straight. Other good line from Cordy "were we in love?" to Angel.

Me too! It is really difficult trying to avoid those spoilers for that particular relationship. I hope it stops here, but, well, you never know.

I think Connor is pursuing Cordy because he sees her as a kindred spirit, someone else who is a bit lost, rather than as a revenge thing. I hope I am right on this though, as there are many hints that it is a way of getting back at Angel, for example the lack of Angel-Cordy photos, and most obviously "She steals the covers" - :O

Just a quick Q here - are there any pics of Angel & Cordy, or Angel and anyone - can Vamps be photographed ? I thought they couldn't - you know like the mirror thing ???

In the last episode there were a whole stack of Angel photos in among Cordy's stuff - I think that's why she asked Connor why he hadn't brought any of those.

I also remember Kate and her surveillance photos in S1 or S2, and being pretty confused at that point. Seemed to me that vampires should be invisible to cameras and video-cameras, but I guess Anne Rice's weren't either, so who knows which Vamp rules Joss is actually going with? ;)

*nods* depends on what rules are being used. Joss's have the lack of reflection thing but they can and have been photographed before. Although I get the impression that Angel at least isn't real fond of having that done. Cordy has pictures of him but he certainly doesn't keep any of them himself.

We had a discussion about this over in the Buffy thread --

cameras don't really work w/ mirrors - the mirror is to reflect the image into the view-finder while you're setting the shot - the mirror then flips out of the way and the film is exposed to the various bits of light - and since light doens't pass through vampires, they would leave an image on the film itself - thus a piccie ---

video cameras don't work the same way - they're magnetic - so, diff scenario -- see BtVS - "Halloween" - Spike has a vamp video Buffy fighting another vamp --
