Now that I've got a list of lost villains, I'm working on how many gates have been lost or destroyed in the course of the series. Along with this is the addition of new gates.

So, in no particular order and only from memory:

(S1)
Earth has two gates, a fact that needs tracking as they come and go.

(S2)
Serpent's Lair -- one gate lost when Klorel's ship explodes
Matter of Time -- gate caught in a black hole

(S3)
Pretense -- we learn that gates CAN be built by technically advanced people, like the Tollan.

Hundred Days -- earthquake buries the gate, Teal'c digs it out to rescue O'Neill, but what happens to the gate after that? I forget.
New Ground -- it is unlikely that the Bendrosians allowed the gate to remain to challenge their faith.

Nemesis -- SGC's gate transported to Thor's ship, recovered from the ocean floor by the Russians. Antarctic gate out of storage.

(S4)
Chain Reaction -- gate destroyed in weapon's test
Exodus -- gate destroyed in plan to blow up Vorash's sun

(S5 -- I haven't seen all of S5 yet)
Ascension -- Orlin can build a single use gate, but must sacrifice a toaster to do it.

Between Two Fires -- the Tollan' gate destroyed by Tanith

(S6)
Redemption 2 -- Anubis blows up the Antarctic gate; SGC gets the Russian gate
Allegiance -- the gate at the Tok'ra base was destroyed when they abandoned the planet

The gate in "Exodus" was the one from "Matter of Time" (obviously...). The gate in "Hundred Days" definitely survived, since that is where Jack travelled to briefly in "Shades of Grey". However, conversely, it is very unclear what happened to the gate in "2001", when the Aschen tried to use the dodgy gate-addresses Sam supplied - including the gate from "Matter of Time". Interesting, but they must have assumed that it was clear again after their use of it in "Exodus"... As for "New Ground", would the Bedrosians know what to do to stop other people coming back through the gate - burying it is not necessarily the first thing to think of, especially for a vertical gate half-buried in rock.

In Exodus there are two gates involved -- the one on Vorash and connected to it, the one caught in a black hole from A Matter of Time. The Vorash gate is launched into the sun where it is destroyed and the one caught in a black hole is -- well, still caught in a black hole.

I think the Tollans' original gate may have been destroyed in the volcanic activity in Enigma, but its been a long time since I've seen the ep. Anybody remember?

Also, my son reminded me that in 48 Hours the gate is destroyed just as Teal'c dives through after firing on Tanith's ship.

If Earth had two gates, then possibly other planets had two as well. And since (quite wisely) the writers have never said exactly how many gates there are, this list is just a record of whether the gate count is +1 or -1 by the end of any particular story.

"Matter of Time" - good point.

Certainly in the middle of "Enigma" the gate on (the original) Tollan was still working - so Sam could send the probe to show it was 1700 degrees. They also wanted to seal the gate to prevent danger to incoming travellers, so they must have thought it would survive the conditions.

I think the gate-count was -1 after Torment of Tantalus. So far, the number of extra gates and those created does not off-set the number of those destroyed.

the one on the Tollan's planet was finally sealed by the lava flow as they couldn't re-establish a wormhole at the end...

OK, then, Enigma leaves the system down 1 gate.

Looks like the count so far is -7 gates (Tantalus, Enigma, Serpent's Lair, Exodus, Chain Reaction, Redemption, Allegiance), not including the gates created by the Tollan & Orlin, and then subsequently destroyed (Ascension, Between Two Fires).

I haven't attempted to catalog how many gates were ordered buried because there's no way of knowing how many were actually buried and stayed buried. The Nox gate still seems to be available as the Nox see fit. The Juna gate (Double Jeopardy) may have been buried again after Chronos' death. The Bendrosian gate (New Ground) may have been destroyed by religious fanatics. I think the gate in Demons was ordered buried, but who knows?

Was the gate in "Chain Reaction" actually destroyed, or just presumed so.... I don't remember the SGC trying to re-establish a link, after the evacuation was halted when the wormhole disengaged.

I'll check my tape and get back to you, but as I recall the "chain reaction" was the naquada bomb igniting the naquada in the soil, then igniting the entire planet. I think someone said that the gate would have been destroyed in the initial blast since the bomb would not have been very far from the gate at the time of detonation and the danger to the SGC came because the gate was still open and connected.

In the matter of gate destruction -- there are some gates that are totally destroyed, shattered, blown to tiny bits, and there are other gates that may be intact but no longer useable -- the Tantulus gate fell into the ocean, for instance. It might still work -- if you're a fish. :D

And there are planets where the gate may still be standing, but the planet has been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by humans. The planet in Scorched Earth would be an example. I haven't included these, but in effect those gates are no longer available.

does the cool little gate Orlin made in accension out of parts from the internet count? cause it was kinda dead after he and Sam used it?

I've already included Orlin's lash-up and the Tollan gate in the count, then subtracted them since Orlin's gate was single use and Tanith destroyed the Tollan gate in Between Two Fires. So they cancel out, leaving the overall gate count still at -7.
