Hey Gang,

As you all know JAD, Shaz and I attended the Amanda Tapping Convention in Sydney on Sunday.

What can I say? It was frelling awesome!

Amanda is the sweetest, nicest and generally most delightful person. She was incredibly funny and had us all in stitches. She spent an extra half hour on stage on top of her scheduled hour, and spent about 4 hours signing autographs for the 200+ people that were there.

Even more wonderful is that she knows of Ascifi.com and has been here before, reading through the forums. When she mentioned that she visited Ascifi, Shaz, JAD and I started screaming out so loud telling her that that was where we were all from. She thought it was great.

We gave her a gift and a card on behalf of the entire Ascifi Aussie Contingent.

Here's some tidbits of news:

- Amanda will be coming back for the 7th season. She said that having one more season will allow them to do a perfect wrap up of the show. All the actors are very happy to do one last season.

- She is very happy to see Michael Shanks returning full time for season 7.

- She will direct an episode in season 7 but it is not known yet which and when.

- Her husband Allan is appearing in a cameo in the season 6 episode Smoke and Mirrors.

- As Shaz already mentioned, she split the audience in two and made us all sing Row Row Row your boat. It was hilarious.

- She spoke very fondly of her time with Stargate and praised the writers, directors and crew for their hard work.

- She climbed the Sydney Harbour bridge on Saturday despite the fact that she is afraid of heights. She said she loves Australia and the people were fantastic.

- She helped out in the charity auction. Her Wormhole X-treme tee-shirt went for about $500 and RDAs jacket went for $2000.

We all had so much fun meeting her.

The experience was made even more wonderul by Rob, Robbie, Amanda B and the gang at Friends of Science Fiction. Their main concern was that everyone who went would thoroughly enjoy themselves, and everyone did. This was their 8th convention and in all the years they have been doing it they have never had any guests cancel, nor have they ever had any problems. They were all so professional and their crew of volunteers were friendly and helpful.

The whole event ran so smoothly and not one person went home dissapointed. In all honesty they did a superb job, and their conventions definetly outshine previous Stargate conventions run by another organisation in the Sydney area.

You can check out the FSF website: http://www.fsf.com.au

There are a few pictures that follow.

Guys - Amanda Tapping is the most charismatic lady I have ever met.
Not only is she a truly wonderful actress, she is hilariously funny, genuinely interested in her fans and what we have to say and incredibly generous.

She had us in stitches of laughter, pulled off some amazing RDA, MS, DS.D and CJ impersonations, she got us singing, and her well performed antics during the auction probably raised the prices of the items up for auction by oh say 200%.

FSF did an ABSOLUTELY incredible job it was well handled and well run.

Not only did we get to meet and greet AT herself, we also recruited some new members!

All in all a very very sensational event that I for one will treasure the memory of, especially as it was my first convention.

Just a short note for now, I will post more tomorrow, Also Josh and Shelby I am SURE will fill you with more details!

BTW: If AT could be a System Lord she wants to come back as Apophis. Dead serious it was one of my questions!

What a fantastic day!

There you go that was my comment last night, which i feel is better placed here.

Everything Shelby said was SOOOOOOOOOOO True. the Lady is awesome. If Sam Carter was anyones role model before I'd say lose the character and idolise the actor - this lady is amazing. FSF said it, fans said and now we say it!

Thanks for the pics Shelby - I have another prob with the Dig. Camera, so mine won't be up for a while.

can you send the one of AT and I to me? - btw I will send your jacket asap also!

my convention report is available on the Our Stargate delphi forum - no photos - no gushing - please good plain amanda quotes - and some unfortunately necessary remarks on people who apparently dont eat lunch even when invited to ...
impressed by amanda but not certain others ... neith

on a weekend after I spent three days in doctors surgeries and path labs ( I have minor exploratory surgery now scheduled for the end of the month which hopefully will NOT lead to major surgery) I really could have used some company at lunch

you missed an excellent VIET beef noodle soup !

( i cant skip meals or snack on junk food due to being on a high protein hypoglycemic diet)

Amanda is very bit as radiant as reported!

Sigh I wish I've had a chance to talk to her for more than thirty seconds I'ld love to co-script with or write for her or help as a sf / cultures consultant !!!

Whoa! - Ok.........

I am sorry neith that we couldn't make lunch - however is it REALLY necessary to allude to us in such a way in your report?

This was my first convention - and I was interested in all the aspects, including the guest speakers and the auction. I enjoyed the auction, as well as AT's suprise entrance in the middle of it.

While I am sorry we could not make lunch, I do not feel it is something for which we should be described in such a way as "people would rather watch a charity auction for a rather tacky cat statute... than socialise!"

A little bit harsh - especially since we really didn't get a chance to even meet. Yes our seats were booked - however just because we didn't look rich enough to bid on some of the supercool stuff didn't mean we couldn't have fun trying (even getting outbidded by 10 year olds in front!)
Obviously, because of your medical condition, you do need to consider where and what to eat, but please do not take your frustration for this out on us!

Once again very sorry we could not make lunch - though perhaps not as sorry now that I have read your very cutting comments of us.

Thanks - but no thanks.

It is a shame that your remarks will go towards tainting such a wonderful worthwhile day.

:(

Thanks for the report Neith! And try not to take it personally if no-one came to dinner. I wouldn't have wanted to miss a single bit of the con. Especially an auction with Amanda... One of my personal best stories is from the SG4 auction...

My website is: http://mysite.freeserve.com/BorgGrail/index.html

It's the SG4 report, page 13 if you want to read what I bid on and what Amanda said about it!

I hope you didn't mind my also reading that report Rowan - very enjoyable, also some great pictures!

The charity auction sounds very similar to the one at this convention - and it was amazing to watch items go off for soooooooo much money. Amanda had brought a SGC jacket, which was supposed to be hers, however before the auctioning of that began she explained that it wasn't hers - she thought it was actually RDA's! As you can imagine - and as Shelby mentioned, the bidding suddenly became alot more female oriented and it eventually sold for $2000. I really enjoyed the auction actually - it was edge of your seat stuff - especially when the ten year old kids in front of us were bidding higher than us!

rowan and others why do I take it personally - cos I'm currently exhausted literally physically emotionally spiritually - the tests I have scheduled are intrusive painful and and will hopefully eliminate cancer as a cause of a certain problem - however I've also been annoyed about this whole lunch thing for a while - I've seen it happen to me and other people of all ages - you arrange to meet with some one or several some ones - you give them your contact details - you leave messages for them at the reg desk and when you ask why they didnt show ... they use your discontent with that as an excuse instead of apologizing - ?!?!?!?

Recyt all since this seems to apply to fans of all genders and ages

the most interesting friends and social companions in the long run on the net or out in mundania are not just the people who seem to be "NICE" - they often turn out to be fair weather friends

A healthy fandom is one in which we celebrate the creativity of and care about not just shipper fantasies or the pros and actors but other fans as well and not just the "nice" ones -

and I'm not just talking about me - too many times I've seen people condemned by folk who havnt taken the time to find out what the real person is like behind the online identity!

final note being a responsible adult fan I have taken the time to politely suggest the possiblity of a meet and greet board to the convenors who also being polite sensible fen actually thanked me for the suggestion?!?!?

Leaving left Neith
