Being a big fan of Alien and Aliens and even to an extent Alien 3, I thought it interesting to note the varied appearances of the creatures in the film.

In the first and second film, the aliens both have an almost bio-mechanical appearance. (Obviously from Gigers design.) However the biggest notable difference would be the head. The alien in Alien has a smooth cranium. A few clues I've read put this down to the fact that it was classed as a "worker".

In Aliens the design was slightly different (and very much my personal favourite.) The body was still vaguely resembling an athletic humanoid (a feature I always thought made them so much more terrifying.) However the head seemed to have ridges almost (for want of a better word) wiring or tubes around the mouth area. This Xenomorph seems to be classed as a warrior and I would assume might evolve in the presence of a queen to protect the hive.

Alien 3 supplied evidence to a mainstream audience (ie: Fans who did not follow the comics or the novel) that the embryos host body will have a direct effect on the physical build of the alien. (Note: the Aliens host was human in the first film, and the second, however there are still physical differences...so I am just guessing with most of this.) As the host for this horror was a very unfortunate Rottweiller. This alien has been called the...wait for it...Dog Alien. (Not by me, but by Toy manufacturers and one or two other sources) It has the smooth head of the worker, but a rather mottled muzzle compared to the above mentioned 'Xeno's. It's body was thin and streamlined and very well adapted for running on all fours. (Which actually all the aliens seemed to be quite good at.)

The last film (and in my opinion the absolute worst in the series) the saw a big change again. Smooth cranium...but the features seemed to have a softer, more fleshy appearance...the colouring had developed into a reddish brown and the legs had taken a.."dog legged" shape. I would imagine this change came from the imperfections of cloned Queen. (copy of a copy or something.) I won't bother even talking about the hybrid thing at the end.

If someone could maybe link me to some proper information about the various types I would greatly appreciate it! Or maybe you just want to comment or crit on my opinions?

I liked the idea that the physical structure of the host has an impact on the resulting alien - with the "dog alien"...

But for the most part, because of the SFX of the times, and actors being human shaped, I suspect that was why in the first two films they were like that... Then I think someone with a CGI fetish thought it might be a good idea to create something different on the Penal Colony... But then in 4 they couldn't do something newer, because of the action being on board a ship - though the swimming aliens was good...

Again, with the "dog-legged" shape, that will have been down to a bit of CGI manipulation, and the "copy of a copy of a copy..." may not have been thought of...

Wonder what Alien vs Predator will bring to the screen, CGI-wise???

Well, if you take a look at Gigers drawings, the aliens in the first two movies had very similiar builds to that. Their bodies did seem genuinely humanoid...as for the 4th one...I blame the the designers for trying to 'modernise' or spruce up what they saw as an old design. For me that touch of humanity turned them into some sort of corrupted and perverted example of nature, its human features a last remnant of it's unwilling parent.

If it aint broke, why fix it?
