Nid

The real NID? It stands for National Institute of Defence, and is a repository for documentation relevant to defence studies among other things.

The Stargate NID? God knows what thewriters' demented little minds think it stands for. Possibly the same thing. But the real NID doesn't do what the Stargate one does. The National Security Agency (NSA) do more of that kind of stuff.

I get a lot my Gulf War medical information from the NID.

Well in the episode 'Desperate Measures' Col. Simmons says that they provide civilian oversight on military projects - so the 'N' could stand for 'Non-military'.

Or the whole thing could stand for Nasty, Ineffective and Devious

Unfortunately......the NSA (or NID as they are called in Stargate) are not dumb. Far from it. However, their agenda is not necessarily in line with any ethics or morality and this makes them a dangerous organisation. They're autonomous, protected and have a certain amount of immunity when it comes to any actions of theirs, even if it relates to the wellbeing of the population in general.

I realise this brings a touch of the 'serious' to an otherwise humorous thread, but people should be aware that organisations like this, official and unoffical, do abound and especially in America, although other countries do have similar organisations.

We do understand, we're just having some fun is all :D

Nafarious Investigations and Dealings :D

AIUI they are fulfilling the "necessary" role of taking any and all steps to "protect" the nation, says this observer from outside! Rhetorically speaking, how far would you go to protect your house, partner and/or child(ren)? They just do it on a national scale, where they also believe the end justifies the means. Also AIUI, they are amateurs when compared to Mossad... ;)

Of course, paranoid belief in protection of a thing (typically state or religion), is what most frequently STARTS wars in the first place...

canon wise...NID means nothing. They've never spelled out what the abbreviation means.

I've always went for national intelligence department if i'm serious and
nitwits in drag if i'm being silly
