Actually, I only bought my copy a few months ago, so it does have the route of the Enterprise in it.
I thought that the book had just been produced. I think the earlier edition was just a folder of loose maps.

I bought it to use it as a reference for role-playing games. I'm not sure why anyone would need such a thing otherwise. It would also be useful as a reference for fan-fic writing.
I've heard that it is one of the tomes they now use on the series itself, together with the 'Star Trek Chronology'. It helps the writers to stay within the established continuity, which must be extremely challenging for a new writer. (And seems to be for the established ones too!)
He has solved a few of the errors that have appeared during the years, with some ingenious explanations. The Planetary classifications part now makes that the official version, to replace the hundreds of fan versions that have appeared. The part on quadrants, sector grids and sectors also makes sense of something that was as clear as mud before.
So, if you are a nitpicker it's worth looking at for those reasons.
