Said to be a 'Boomer' episode.

from Trek Today
Rumoured to see Mayweather returning to his old ship, the E.C.S. Horizon. His father has died, and his brother, Paul, is now captain of the freighter. While Mayweather is aboard the Horizon, the ship comes under attack from an unknown alien species.

Marks the first appearances of some of Mayweather's family members - his mother, Sarah, and his brother, Paul.

Which alien 'unknown' species might this be?

Romulans? Gorn?

didn't one of the past eps hint at the Romulans already? I can't remember now but I though they were mentioned even though we didn't see them...

Yes, it was a Cloaked Romulan ship in 'Minefield'.

I don't think it will be the Gorn either, because I just read a Rick Berman interview where he says that they 'might' be seen. I'm sure that he would have said 'will be seen' if they were in this.

I hope we don't see too many 'unknown' species in Enterprise though. There are enough under-explorered species from TOS and TNG we could have a better look at.

I agree. They probably feel that adding all these "unknowns" somehow gives us a more realistic sense of the diveristy in the universe. But, instead... it just annoys us that they leave so many potential plots unresolved. It makes me wonder... "hey, what about those..." and then I never get to find out. Very annoying.

ftom Trek Today
While Enterprise is on its way to investigate a planetary phenomenon near Earth, Mayweather gets a chance to visit his family on their cargo ship, but his homecoming is cut short when the ship is attacked by alien pirates. Meanwhile, aboard Enterprise, T'Pol and Phlox, who are horror-movie novices, are introduced to the unique human experience of watching the black and white version of Frankenstein with the rest of the crew."
Original Airdate: April 16, 2003

Apparently these alien pirates have been in contact with Enterprise before, that's how Mayweather can disable their engines with ease, but I personally can't remember them -- then again all Star Trek aliens look the same :D

AT LAST A MAYWEATHER EPISODE...

I thought that it was all done quite well, even though both the 'prodigal son' and the brother-versus-brother conflict between Paul and Travis, stories were cliches, and Travis' debating whether or not he should leave Starfleet was never really in doubt. Plus the B-stories about the planet of interesting geological features, and Tucker's film night weren't so good, or as funny as intended.

We didn't find out much about Mayweather that we didn't already know, but he got a chance to act at least, instead of sitting at the pilot's chair.

I got the impression it was the same crowd as attacked Enterprise when they rush built their cannons. It was certainly what Mayweather infered, and the ship looked similar, though where the species name appeared from is anybodies guess.
Perhaps they met them again, in one of the gaps between episodes?
Ah, sorry there aren't any anymore are there? ;)

Otherwise I think I am inclined to follow Skoon's lead here. There wasn't a lot of anything in the episode
